Is anyone watching the gold rush re-enactment show on the History International Channel? Part 3 was on last night 9 pm CST. Shows 4 guys and a woman re-living history as gold prospectors in the 1897 Alaska gold rush. They do a lot of walking, packing and sailing on small boats to get up the Yukon. There have been a few similar shows on the same channel and they all have the one thing in common that everyone was hungry all the time. I fully realize that was the brutal truth for most folks before modern grocery stores but I can't understand why the producers don't at least entertain the thought that people hunted for subsistence while on these journeys. Last night, the actors had their guns taken away by the Mounties, which they said was common during the Gold Rush. I can't believe that anyone in their right minds would allow their weapons to be confiscated on the frontier outside of established towns but that is what they purported as fact for the times.
On last night's episode, the actors killed a grouse and a gopher with rocks - that was the only meat they had for some time. Again, I'm sure this is close to the truth since game would soon leave an area where a lot of people were traveling. I have been on long hunting trips where we ran out of food but didn't kill anything and we got pretty hungry. The re-enactors did a lot of sailing and rowing but no one fished as they went down the river - wouldn't it have made sense to drop a few hooks and troll? I know these shows are done for the sake of Hollywood but they seem to ask us to suspend common sense.
At any rate, even with these minor points, it's a pretty good show and it's apparent from the film that the country is still pristine. You may want to catch it next week for the conclusion.
