Slightly off topic, but just finished Century of Conflict by Joseph Lister Rutledge (Popular Library, 1956). This is part of a Canadian History series but is very informative about life between 1660 and 1760, focusing on the struggle between the British Colonies and the French in Canada. Highly recommended.

Allan Eckert has a series of book about the pre-American Revolution that are excellent if a little hard to get through. Bernard DeVoto's Across the wide Missouri is good.

Wild Life in the Far West, personal adventures Of Border Mountain. By Captain James Hobbs, of California. ~1872.
Author lives with Comanches for some time, hunts under Kit Carson. scalps, Apaches, Mexican War, 1849 gold rush stuff, Peg-Leg Smith, war by France against Mexico, assorted large animals, &c
Hey - back in the 1970-80's one could buy such from John King's Bookstore in Detroit. For a few bucks I could get Dad Civil War books written when their wounds still bled. Like, stuff that's not written in modern books.
If Wild Life has been reprinted, get it.

Schoolcraft left good books on life and travel along the trans frontier
Townsend’s offers several journals of folks passing through the Americas late colonial through federal period

While not exactly history Kenneth Roberts wrote a series of novels about American history from the FIW to War of 1812 including one, Oliver Wiswell, told from the point of a Loyalist in AWI. All very readable and entertaining.

Drums Along The Mohawk
A Rabble in Arms
Northwest Passage
Arundel
Oliver Wiswell
was already mentioned

IF you can find the DVD (yes I know the question was about "books"), Allegheny Uprising with John Wayne and Claire Trevor is fun...., and it's a young John Wayne. Not that bad for the 1930's
It's curious as there they are doing a scene in Hollywood California, and they show the loading of a musket by holding the ball in the palm of the hand and covering it with poured powder....,
Somebody knew about muzzleloaders....
