anyone know anything about applying for public black powder hunts? i'm in texas, but would be willing to travel some. does anyone know of any good WMA's to hunt Bp? i know there are public drawings for mule deer and elk in new mexico and other states, anyone know where i can get info on these? i know Gus Engeling WMA in East Texas has a black powder only hog season. i'd like to try that some. accessible with a $48 public hunt permit. anyone know any other moderatly priced adventures they'd be willing to share info on?

Try the Colorado Division of Wildlife web site. www.wildlife.state.co.us. There is a ML big game season every year, before the regular rifle season. Lots of public land here too. BLM and National Forest and WMA too.
It's a bit pricey tho, $290. for non resident deer, $250. for cow and $485. for bull elk. Muzzleloading dates are Sept 10-18. Applications must be postmarked by midnight April 5, 2005.
If you ever decide to give Colorado a try, let me know and mebbe we could hunt together, or Ill share what I know about where to go (still learnin tho...)

thanks for the info, if i go to colorado i'd definetly be interseted in goin with someone who'd been before. i'll likely be keepin my hunting to texas for a little while. my school schedule will keep me close for a yera or two yet. sept is prime time test time, hard to take off for a week and hunt elk. i'm definetly doin the WMA's though. Gus Engeling, Old Sabine Bottom, Sam Houston National Forrest. soon as i got a little more freedom though i'd love to chase some elk or muleys.

might look at Chaparall WMA in LaSalle county (Cotulla)area. Brushy, game is usually within BP ranges. Went on a BP hunt there years ago.

Erich: You are on the right track for Texas. It's PWD and WMA with the $48 permit. I hunted Honeycreek WMA north of San Antonio several years. Nice deer, Aouadad, muflon sheep, even had an Elk one year. Also watch for the National Wildlife Areas, Like Laguna Atascosa near Point Isabel and Matagora Island near Rock Port, there may be more but these are good places to watch for. I have seen trophy animals on all of them. Passed on a couple because just couldn't afford the cost to have them mounted at the time. You can usually use black powder weapons any time you would be able to use (modern).
Fox

If you have questions about weapons just call the area and ask them if you can use black powder.

You are welcome to come hunt Michigan.

www.michigan.gov/dnr

We have millions of acres in public federal, state and commmercial forest hunting lands.

You will get pinched with a non-resident liscense though.
No application required for Deer, just the $129/non resident fee.

how do you get access to honeycreek? is it by drawing only or can i access it with a public permit? i don think i've heard of that place before. but i'm in san antonio, so that'd work out well for me possibly. michigan would be awesome, i could even live with the $129 license. but thats a little too far for me right now.

I have been hunting the WMA in Texas with the $48.00 permit for a couple of years. Aquilla WMA is just west of Hillsboro on I-35 it is black powder /shotgun only. The LBJ grasslands north of Decatur is also black powder/shotgun but no permit is needed.Aquilla has heavy brush/timber but the game is there if you do a little scouting. :m2c:

Erich: Honey creek is a part of Guadalupe River Park between Borne and bullverde about 30 miles North of San Antonio. It is by drawing but I sat on the gate and was allowed to hunt 6 out of 7 years. Its a nice park just to go camping or fishing at anytime. Its clean and lots of wildlife to look at.
Fox

i know exactly where that is. for some reason honeycreek didn't ring a bell. when you say sat on the gate what do you mean? you just showed up? or how'd you go about gettin in on it? also about the other post i know where aquilla is as well, i just havent' visited yet. i want to go though. my list of things i want to do far exeeds my free time though. gotta try and plan things ahead. i'd love to try and get on that deal at guadalupe though. thats close to home even.

patch:

have you ever had any luck on aquilla? i've hunted them for dove and such, but no big game yet.

Erich

Erich: At Guadalupe on hunt dates just show up at the gate about 2 Hours early. If they have say 30 opening and only 20 show up then they usually draw for the other 10 from everbody at the gate. This fills the quota and you pay your money and hunt just like you were drawn. The odds are better at the gate. You can call and they will tell you what to do.
