Anybody collecting the David Thompson Wilderness Series? (Nat King mountain man)

I recently got into them....got about 35 of the 60 books in the regular series and one of the giant ones.

I also got one of the William Johnstone Preacher series books.

I think there are 48 books in that series.
Couldn't figure out which to collect 1st so just went with Thompson.

haven't read one of those yet, but when I see where you are the book I'm now reading is just incredible.

That Dark and Bloody River - Allan Eckert

history of colonial expansion down the Ohio river valley. it's heavy.

yup!! got all of them except the newest. Do yourself a favor, read all of them in order so you dont ruin the surprises!

Been doing that so far...1st one I picked up was the double edition #21/#22.

Then I got into them and found abunch more...got #1-12 then a bunch of later ones.

Need like 30 more...was reading some of the back covers of the newer ones and almost spoiled things just reading those!

I think something happens to one of the main characters...I'm gonna be bummed.... :( :shake:

Try "The Big Sky" by A.B Guthrie a classic

I'll look up both when I get the chance...thanks.

I have most of the Johnstone books, with some duplicates. Most are cowboy stories. I liked the Preacher ones.
PM me if you need anything.

you'll also want to look up Terry C. Johnston series
Carry the wind
Borderlords
Cry of the hawken
One eyed dream.

Theres a many more, i just do not have the complete list.

You want a heavy read? try Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian". that one will put the hair on your neck up. :shocked2:
Its all about the scalp trade and Texas-Mexico border violence from 1846-'51, and what really sets it off is that I found out its a fictionalized version of actual historical events.

This is a great book and is the first of a trilogy. The next book is "The Way West" and then comes "Fair Land, Fair Land. There is an overlapping of characters in these stories that lends continuity. The first two were also made into films.

Due to this thread I ordered some up and dove in. I've just finished #2. Thanks guys great reading and can't wait to see what happens at the ronny in #3.

Kentuckywindage, If Bill Hammond (Badwater Bill) still lives in Bon Carbo look him up. He and I used to shoot muzzleloaders and rendezvous together in the late 1990's when I lived in New Mexico. The last time I talked to him he was making knives.

There are 68 total and I think I need 28 of them.

Down to needing 12 now.... :youcrazy:

Good books arent they?!! Very addicting. #1 is still my favorite as its the starting point and you get to have all the fun imagining being there at the hawken shop, shouldering a hawken and going shopping for all the supplies. Makes me feel like i got an egg stuck in my throat.

I'll scan a list of the complete series for those who would like to start their own collection. Theres a good # of the double editions that are not listed.

I'd second Kentuckywindage's recommendation! The Terry C. Johnston Titus Bass series, 9 books in all, is a drama that covers the time frame from 1810 to 1857, encompassing the entire period of the Western Fur Trade and the Westward expansion. After a 25 year hiatus, I've just finished a re-read of the entire series - all 4,740 pages! A great, historical docudrama read that should provide any fur trade enthusiast with a lot of entertaining pleasure. In sequence, the books are:

1. CARRY THE WIND
2. BORDERLORDS
3. ONE-EYED DREAM
4. BUFFALO PALACE
5. CRACK IN THE SKY
6. RIDE THE MOON DOWN
7. DANCE ON THE WIND
8. DEATH RATTLE
9. WIND WALKER

All are available in paperback editions; hardbacks are hard to find, because of collectability. mjw

I don't know them. I moved back to Texas to retire in 2002. Badwater Bill is a retired US Forest Service guy who is interesting to tramp the woods with. He knows every plant, tree and bush, as well as animal habits. I just tried calling them and got an answering machine. Net search shows them at the same PO Box address and phone as when we last talked. Good luck
