Got a new rifle

Have a great best friend, since we were both 9 years old, and he needed a caplock for his adult son. We traded rifles..I'd admired one of his flinters and had a great Hawken I'd had for 40 years that shoots plumb center...so we did an even swap. I never even mess with caplocks anymore. Here it is. It is a .54 cal w/ Colerain swamped barrel and English lock...I find that lock (am use to German locks) likes a tad more powder.
She initially shot dead center but 4" high so I've whittled on the sights and am 2" high at 25 yards.
I like plumb center at 25 yds with a full load as I can adjust from there from habit. [/img]

Hasn't been shot much, very fresh (Buddy bought a beautiful .54 flint at last years CLA) and he's hardly used it. I usually buy high sell low but made out on this deal for sure. [/img]

Yup, good friends are hard to beat...I tried to give him some cash too but he wouldn't take it. Said he would borrow it when he came to visit when we went out shooting.
I'm a real fan of those Colerain barrels.

Very nice gun and I'd have to say that rifle says "Early Virginia". In fact, you ought to post it in the thread "Early Virginia Styling".

Yeah, the mid/late Colonial period rifle is my favorite.
I think the history of that period and what it lead up to makes the difference for me.
The flintlock reached its zenith in the Colony's and young USofA and that connection to history is what makes this a multi faceted sport.

I def. made out but we both know it, he's my best friend for 50 plus years now and....
It wasn't a TC Hawken...nice browned steel with german silver end cap and a really sweet set trigger.
Won lots of blanket shoots with that booger hitting steel knock downs at 200 meters off hand.
