Got my turkey this morning. Young Jake, probably in the 10-12 pound range. 8 Inch beard, no spurs. Nine of them walked in front of me at between 15 and 20 yards. He was the first to expose himself enough for a shot. Load was 75 grains ffg, one overpowder card, 2 overshot cards, 1 1/4 oz. #5 lead shot, one overshot card.

I wish we had a fall season, the turkey flock in my backyard needs thinnin' and the danged wolf pack just lays under the porch, snoozin'. I guess they're gittin' old like me. :shake:

Congrats on the bird. They are a lot of fun with the flinters huh. I took a friend of mine out yesterday and he got his first ever turkey. A nice hen. He used my Navy Arms double barrel .12 ga caplock. Load was 80 gr Pyrodex RS, and overpowder wad, half a cushion wad 1 1/4 oz of #5 lead and an overhot card.

Looks like a wild bird for Thanksgiving this year. You can't beat that. I'am still trying for my fall Turkey. Congrats.

No Deer,
Congratulations! How you going to prepare
it for the table? Smoked, baked or deep fried?
The smaller ones are great smoked. IMO
snake-eyes :hmm:

Thanks everyone. It is a thrill to take one with a flintlock.

Yes it is 20 ga. 42 inch barrel.

I skinned it and fileted the breast meat off and cut off the thighs. Being so young it should be good eating. I saved the wings, put them in the freezer, will get to them later, gonna make a couple more wingbone calls. Saving the wing and tail feathers too.

Someday I will pluck one so that I can roast it whole. Will have to find a bag big enough to freeze it in though. That is one reason why I skin it, that and don't really look forward to plucking 3000ish feathers :rotf:
