Got One on the Way!

Well, I've spent pretty much the last year and a half looking for a flinter (I never said I was good at making decisions!). After this long, I've himmed and hawed over having a gun made and been pretty much back and forth on what I want. Finally, even I couldn't take it any more! I recently got a small inheritance, so I ear marked some for a flinter. I'm very good about saving my money and being "sensible", so I decided to loosen up on myself and get a flinter. My wife has been encouraging me to do it, since I've been talking about it for 18 months. I think she might be getting tired of listening to me? :yakyak:

So, a nice Caywood Type C popped up on TOTW, and I snapped it up. Now I'm excited! I have only shot a flinter twice - two different guns owned by a couple of friends - and I was pretty enchanted by the whole thing. I'm looking forward to getting familiar with a quality piece. I've always been a believer that if you really want something to enjoy, buy quality. All I've heard about Caywood products has been excellent, so I figured it was a wise choice. If it arrives in enough time to do some patterning, I hope to try it on turkeys this year.

So, this being my first flinter, I'll be bombarding you fellas with questions. Hopefully, they won't all be stupid ones. ff:

Waugh! Nice choice, too. Danny makes some really fantastic guns, you'll be happy with it. What gauge is it?

I just got a Caywood North West Trade gun a month ago, and love it. Mine also has a .54 rifle barrel which I using now, until I can figure out a good 20g ball load for it, and then start casting probably. I'm still learning how to shoot it, but having a great time. Check out the "flintlock shooting tips?" thread I started. All kinds of good info there.

Congradulations on your choice of guns (flinter) ... I've heard nothing but good about Caywood. From what I'm seeing on this site, you will have plenty of help answering your questions. Don't think a thing about asking dumb ones as we've all been there.... Lord knows I've asked my share over the years.
Now, just be patient and don't get discouraged as it takes a bit of time changing over from percussion to flinter but its worth it :imo:

It's a 20 ga. I am really looking forward to being a flinter! I even have visions of me in traditional garb, bagging my first deer in years, the REAL way. I'll have to change in the woods though - my friends already think I've got a screw loose.

First of all...awesome looking shooter. I went into the track site yesterday to look for it (I still want that matchlock, but...)

Second, at least you're getting soon...Track's good about getting stuff out, especially when they have it sitting there in front of them.

Last but not least: Let your friends think that you have a screw loose, then drag a buck out of the woods that you killed with a rocklock smoothbore with no rear sights while wearing your primmies. Then you'll be "my buddy who hunts all hunt primitive and nails a buck every year with that #$%*@ smoothbore flint-thing of his". Also, go hunt rabbits, squirrels, birds, varmits, and anything else legal in your state with that gun...you might end up with some people following you out in primmies!

Well said, StumblinBuffler! :haha: Baron, that IS one nice lookin' smoothbore. Like you, I have been bitten by the flintlock bug ::. The disease started out innocently enough;
1. Only hunted with percussion ML in ML season (from age of 13 on). Shot it maybe once a year or two at range.

2. Began more regular trips to the range with percussion TC Hawken and then with and old Santa Fe Hawken.

3. A deeper interest in MLs overcame victim (me) and began taking ML into woods during REGULAR gun season :hmm: Modern guns gathering dust.

4. Was given an inline for Christmas by a well-intending father-in-law, partly as a ill-fated attempt to cure me of the blackpowder bug?. Hunted with it a few times, discovered it was a BEAR to clean, and soon gravitated back to traditional percussions, trading, selling, and finally settling on a .54 GPR.

5. Purchased a percussion dbl shotgun and discovered the JOY OF BLACKPOWDER TURKEY HUNTING

6. Discovered The MUZZLELOADING FORUM and found a bunch of nice folks who had same symptoms me (and shared the compusion to breathe deep the sulfuric smell...). By now many friends and relatives think I'm a bit eccentric, however, daughter starting to show same symptoms.

7. ADVANCED STAGE: Came across Bookie's website and saw those beautiful Southern Mountain Rifles. Just had to have one! Bookie's booked for 18 mo. Two Shadows points me to Roger Sells in TN, another builder of authentic southern flintlocks. Details hammered out, a .54 flinter with curly maple, swamped 42" GM barrel, banana-style box, "hunter's moon" inlay and a targeted completion date of August! Start selling a few percussions to pay for flinter.

7A. Those smoothbore flintlocks look interesting :hmm: :hmm: I wonder if I could bag a turkey with one of those..........
