Now as I've said before, I don't do my best work with the flintlock. But Vixen, my Jim Correll " schimmel" inspires me.
So I decided it was her turn to get dirty today.
The load was a .490 Hornady ball, .015 Ox Yoke patch lubed with Bore Butter, a .54 cal Ox Yoke wad and 70 grains of 3f Swiss Holy Black.
The rest position was right at the only rammer thimble, about 4 inches back of the muzzle.
I shot 3 round groups at 50 yards. First 3 were an inch on the dot. 2nd 3 were 1 13/16ths. Had a patch tear... The last 3 were 1 1/2 and overlap of the groups was excellent.
This was definitely my best day with Vixen!
She is a VERY petite rifle. Chuck Dixon said she was " About as light a .50 caliber as you can get" The barrel is an old Getz, says Chuck. Its a 7/8ths x 33 with what I'm guessing a 1-70 twist.
Anyway. She's doing right by me and I hope to blood her soon.
Flintlocks have vexed me terribly over the years. But I'm not going to be beaten. Vixen was virtually unfired when I got her. I find some rifles to be alot like women. Fickle and jealous. Maybe this one is grateful?

My Vixen...

Yes she is. Not that I'm partial or anything...
I will shoot anything that requires me to pour powder and ram. But right now, if I had the coin, I'd have someone make me a twin of Vixen. But as a percussion.
It just amazes me how WELL everything comes together in this ( very) petite .50.
2020's single bright spot, other than my youngest grandson making his appearance, is Vixen.
