gourd canteen

when useing a gourd as a canteen do you just fill it with water and plug it or do you have to cure the inside.

The goard must be throughly dry and cured.( I cure mine for a full year ) I have had fairly good luck sealing them with melted beeswax inside, and marine varnish outside. But remember with use they are not a durable canteen. Origional but not really durable. For durability an old milatary or the old heavy boy scout canteens covered with rawhide hold up much better.
