wondering how tight of groups you liver eatin johnston men are getting with GPR and PRB. So far my 50 yard target is a ragged hole up to about 3 inches and the 100 yards is pattern out to about 9 or 10 inches. wondering if I can tighten it some or if thats it. could just be my eyes.

I don't have a GPR but I have some T/C rifles and other brands that will do better then that off a bench rest at 100 yards. If this is free standing that is a different matter.

I will say that my eyes are no longer what they used to be and I found the kind of sights I have on the rifle make a big difference also.

If you have a friend who can shoot the rifle at the same distances, compare the results. It might give you some indication of the problems....

I can git 2" groups at 75yds and 3" groups at 100yd.
....on a good day
on a bad day after drinkin 12 cups o coffee and smokin
1/2 pack of ciggarettes things open up considerably.
Course I never wear my specs while shootin....iffin I wore
em, I probably wouldnt even hit paper!
50 year ole eyes aint no fun.....
all in all....aint to bad a shootin fer a iron sighted
frontstuffer! In ned roberts book he clains that he could after much practice hit a 3x5 target at 200yds fairly consistantly. This is the guy responsible for the .257 ROBERTS cartridge......so I guess it is possible.....

Yeah, I was havin' the same doubts, Eye sight I mean. Took out a .22 which was good for 1/2 to 3/4" at 50 with scope. Pulled off the scope and shot 1 1/2" with open sights (good target style open sights). So I figure about 3MOA is as good as I can do with good open sights. Over that is the gun and load. Sounds like your load could stand refinement. :results:

My t/c from a bench,on a rest, on good days with iron sights I would say softball groups at the 100 yard target.I don't blame the gun ,the eye's are not what they were.I can clover leaf groups at the 50 with no problems but the 100 seem rough if the sight picture is not there. :redthumb:

My GPR .50 will do 2"" at 75 with a .395 ball and 70grs. 2f. I had the "adjustable sights on it, but replaced em with the non- adj. , like the looks of them better. Took some squirrels with it, longest was in top of a pine at 60 yds., For some reason I can't seem to miss with the ole girl. Mt Renegade .50 does just as well, but like the GPR better!

Ya must be using a real thick patch with that .395 rd ball in a .50 cal. :: Just kiddin' ya. I figure that was a typo and you meant .495.

I wuz shootin a 6" at 100 yds with my lyman trade rifle, usin shootin sticks. This wuz my 2nd time out with the rifle. I aggree you should experiment with load combinations. I know I have not yet found the "sweet load", but its fun tunin' her in

I just shot my .54 GPR at both 50 and 100 yards this past weekend.
At 50 I was getting my usual ragged hole.
At 100 it opened up to about 4 inches.
The wind was gusting, quartering towards me at about 45 degrees.
This is the first time I have shot it at 100 yards.
The next really calm day I go out I will shoot at 100 again to see what she'll do.

Forgot to say that this is with PRB, it's all Betsy will be fed.

Huntin

I just tried squeezing all the moose milk out so the patch is just damp, that cut the 100 yard group in half.

Hi Harpman,I have a .50 cal.GPR I fire .495 PRB in aswell.I am in the process of sighting her in since I have changed out the sights.I found,to my dismay, my eyes did not see the sights or the target for that matter aswell as they did 10 years ago. It's too bad when ones sights go bad,eh? :crackup:I put lyman hunting sights on her.I was getting about the same as you were before I ran out of powder ,ball and daylight. Now I will have to go to the range again this weekend instead of planting that tree for my wife...we all must make our sacrifices.

Hi Harpman.Something I did to improve accuracy was to tap in a brass tack on the comb of the stock. It is positioned such that if I place the corner of my mouth on it as an anchorpoint my sight picture should be consistant, adding to accuracy.I drilled a tiny hole, smaller than the diameter of the pointy part of the tack, put a dab of gorilla glue in the hole then tapped the tack in.It does not take away from the beauty of the weapon but I doubt others will want to do that. This, plus the new sights I hope will give me very good accuracy.

Jack-that tack idea is pretty interesting. Kinda reminds me of a "kisser button" some bowhunters use to anchor the string at same point. The Lyman hunting sights are excellent! :)
