Looking for information from anyone that has finished a Lyman great plains kit. How much of the inletting is done and to what degree IE; is it assembled in the white or do the parts need to be fitted. Is the buttplate installed, are the metal parts in the white or blued/browned etc.

Thanks
Cody

Cody,
The bbl and hardware are in the white.

It doesn't take much with 320 paper to get this stuff ready for browning.

I slow brown the bbl, pipe stuff and butt plate--- slow blue the trigger guard so it matches the lock. I find the 320 finish gives the best results with LMF - carding every 3 hrs.

The inletting is really very good. Everything is within 3/32" or less. I actually open up all stress points a little extra to avoid splitting from recoil.

The wood quality leaves some to be desired. I found scraping seems to clean things up much more than sanding.

It is one of those things with a little extra work it can look really nice.

I sold mine a couple weeks ago and am starting another one.

I enjoy doing it.

You will too.

I've built two in the last few months so I will answer your questions based on my own experience. All of the inleting is done but the real work lies in the removal of wood to make it all flush. Be prepared to use lots of sandpaper and perhaps a file to smooth it all up to snuff. It is not pre assembled except for the nose cap and trigger plate and butt plate which you will need to remove for finishing. Even though it isn't pre-assembled it fits together as if it were, very easy! All hardware is in the white and you will need to brown it (or blue it but who would want to do that, just kidding) and the metal requires some filing and sanding to remove some parting lines and stuff. The kits I built were .54 percussions.

I built a GPR caplock kit a few years ago. It looks great. My Christmas present to myself this year is a GPR flint kit. Now you know my opinion of them.

Great site guys. Just starting to dig into it. I'm going to order a GPR kit after the first of the year. Will be my first build, sounds like it is well within my means. Ultimately I want to build from scratch, except for the barrel because I don't have the means to build that.
