well i am starting to get everything set up for the gpr i am ordering next week. i went to three stores today and all they had were cci nipples. i read on this forum a few months ago that cci didnt fit very well on lyman nip's. so i guess my question is what nipple do i buy? i plan on hunting with with this rifle using goex 2f that i bought today also. black powder deer season weather here is usually below zero so i need the best ignition possible.

It's no big deal.I was told the same & yes they
are a little to tight & cause it to not fire
on the first shot.

Just chuck the nipple in a hand drill & spin
it & use a fine file to turn the dia down some.

It really doe's not take much.Since doing that
I have not had a misfire.

Hope this helps

That's a good solution when Ampco or hot shot nipples aren't readily available. But just go slow and only take off a tiny bit.

They'll still work if you go a little too far, but then the caps have a tendency to fall off. Fortunately there's an easy fix if that happens, too. Just squeeze the edge of the cap a little between your thumb and finger before you push it onto the cap.

Any nipple is probably better than Lyman's. Except maybe Pedersoli's, they are awful too.
I recommend not drilling a Lyman nipple and getting a good one instead.

what about these spitfire nipples or other "hot" nipples. i am just looking for whatever nipple will give me the best ignition under the extreme cold weather i am going to put the gun through. if i file the lyman nipple and it will give me good ignition during the january muzzleloader season then that is what i will do. thanks for the replies thus far guys

Lyman's stock nipples are fine. I've never had a problem with them. I use Remington #11 caps and have NEVER had a misfire in over 2,000 shots with my GPR. That is no lie or exaggeration. NO MISFIRES EVER and I have shot in temps from ten below up to 100 above.

well thats that. i will file it down little by little to fit cci caps. thanks dawg.

I have a Lyman trades rifle and never have had a prob yet. Ive run pyrodex, ffg and fffg through it and its always gone off. Mind you I have not shot as much as some of you. But so far so good.

Cheers

My trade rifle started blowing the hammer back to full cock within just a few shots. New Nipple. No blowback.... .54 caliber and loads from 60 - 80 grains 2f goex. Always fired though.

My advise was not aimed at your post. It was intended for sdhunter, as it stated. The reasoning behind my thought process is, there have been several posts that suggest a person that is having problems with Lyman or Pedersoli nipples to drill them out. I am not for that procedure. I will endeavor to make myself more clear in the future.

You know you caused me to think and how fast we are to condemn something. I don't have a very representative sample of Lyman cap guns. The “two” that I do have may just be an abnormally. Neither of them worked well until I replaced the nipples.

Never had any problems with Pedersoli nipples, and I've put at least 1500 rounds through my 20 gauge SxS.

Sir, maybe you are correct, too. My sample of Pedersoli's is small and may just be luck of the draw. It does cause one to think, however, when each gun is the same way, in a row! :hmm: Replaced the nipples and they work great.

That's my standard prescription for any cap gun that misbehaves. I tend to buy caps several thousand at a time, so it's not "convenient" to switch caps to match a nipple. Better to keep an assortment of nipples in the drawer and match them to whichever caps I have on hand, then switch again if I get a good buy on another brand of caps.

Around here CCI is the only cap that's commonly available, and the Lyman nipples don't work worth phooey with them, though they're fine with Remingtons. I recently got 3,000 of Remingtons at $2 a tin, so as the replacements my Lymans are wearing right now wear out, I'll happily switch back to the original Lyman nipples once I blow through the current stock of CCIs and move on to Remington.

I prefer Ampco bronze nipple # RLP-A down near the bottom of this page. I think the "hot shot" style nipples I got came from Knight or someone. They work just fine, but seem worse than the Ampco's about bedding cap fragments inside the hammer cup. After trying the Ampco's I took off the hot shots, and they're rattling around in a drawer somewhere.

Here's a post on the subject I made awhile back

Nipples often need to be fitted for caps. Here's what I do to make sure I have reliable detonation.

Let me warn ya, its not as simple as just replacing the nipple.

Now, many a shooter here will tell you to use BP only. And I agree with them to a certain degree. I have to travel an hour to and an hour from my nearest source of real BP. With Homeland Security requirements, BP sources are drying up and Pyrodex and other substitutes are becoming your only available propellent. So, one needs a hotter source of ignition.

First, make sure the nipple you replace the original with has the proper threads for your gun.

Once the new nipple is installed, quite often your hammer will fall on the cap and nothing happens. The first thing many will tell you to do is to replace your main spring. This may help and again it may not. The most likely cause for this mis-fire is not the mainspring, but an over sized nipple cone.

To cure this problem, you will need masking tape, a power drill, a fine grain knife sharpening stone, dishsoap, a percussion cap and a small amount of water. I generally do this job at the kitchen sink when the ole lady is not at home.

First wrap the threads of the nipple to be honed with masking tape. Two to three wraps should do the trick. Once that is done, chuck the threaded end of the nipple in the power drill. Now put a small amount of dishsoap, mixed with a couple of drops of water, on your stone. Making sure you match the original angle of the cone and with the drill on low, careful not to overheat your nipple, slowly turn the cone side of the nipple on your stone. Don't over do it, keep stopping every so often to use the cap as a guage to ensure a proper fit.

Once you are sure that you have a proper fit, be sure to clean the nipple thoroughly and that the vent is clear of debris. Remove masking tape, dry, oil and install on your gun. I use a little plumber's teflon tape to install mine. If you try this, make sure you don't cover the vent hole.

Hope that this helps.

thanks clay pipe, i will be getting the gpr next week and just trying to have an idea what to do if this problem occurs with the nipple. i guess if i do screw the nipple up i can order a ampco.i did get some goex 2f that will hopefully help with the ignition but the problem is i dont think i will be able to get ahold of real bp for much longer.

I recently bought a Lyman GPR and I love its accuracy and pointability, great hunting rifle and great value for the price. At that price you cant expect not to have to upgrade a few bits.

I had heaps of misfires with mine at new using standard nipple and the same components as you. I put on a hotshot nipple and things improved. Changed to Remington caps and now I see an orange flash when I fire, whereas not with the CCI which have caused a lot of misfifres. I didn't have much luck with the Ampco nipple and CCI caps but that may be different with the remington caps.

The single most important thing I changed however was my powder. On advice received on this site I switched to FFFg and the difference is incredible. I believe it is because of the smaller grain size. It flows more readily into the breach and ignites more easily because of greater surface area. I know nothing compared to others on this site when it comes to technicalities but I know what makes my rifle go bang!
