lots of info here, it is good to share it. ill put in a little info for those who will have a 50 cal barrel made, as to the best twist rate. for a 50 cal round ball a 1/56 to 1/60 is best. the reason for this is this twist rate allows you to use various loads of powder from light to heavy and still have maximum accuracy. 1/70 or 1/72 can achieve good accuracy but it usually requires a larger powder load and can be fussy about getting the perfect powder load. a 1/48 wist can shoot roundballs well but the charge for good accuracy is lighter than many like to use. again a 1/56 to 1/60 twist will shoot point on at any range with any powder load. every round ball muzzleloader i built with a 1/60 twist in 50 cal never gave problems with accuracy. i can remember taking a nice antelope buck with just such a gun with ease at 150 yards. the powder charge was 100 grains of real black. thanks for listening, blackhill bob
