Tested 2 bullets, the 370 maxi tc, and the 410 hbsp hornady. The test is not complete but it looks like the hornady is ahead of the tc. I started at 90 grs. of ffg, a tc bore button, and shot both. the hornady did not shoot over 1.5" except when I got sloppy about my cleaning. The tc shot twice the size at best. Then I dropped to 80 grn.ffg and both did poorly. Then 100 grns. ffg and the hornady was back to 1.5" ran out of light so I'll shoot the tc at 100 grns. later. I'm hoping that 1.5" at 50 yrds. is'nt the best it will do. Anyway, I'll test more bullets soon.

The T/C Maxiball is designed to be loaded directly on top of the powder, the base of the projectile must expand to fill the grooves when fired, the tc bore button may be preventing this from happening...

Concider trying the T/C Maxiball without the bore button and see if the groups tighten up...

try loading with a card wad for base protection, but being harder material, will allow proper obturation.
: BOTH bullets require obturation for sealing.
: Because of the exceptionally wide, deep grease grooves in the TC bullet, it collapses instead of expands when striking large game. It is a poor bullet for elk or moose. They also glance on striking bone. The flat nosed bullets are much better killers and straight-line penetrators.
; Heavier charges as you've found out, overweigh the energy absorbtion of the fibre wad you're using, that is protecting the base from light loads. That's why heavier loads are more accurate. They are expanding the slug into the rifling, better. They may shoot better, anyway.

I agree....for example, .45cal/255grn Maxi-Hunters are very accurate in my TC Hawkens and have been awsome on a couple of deer

Thankyou for the replies. Just got a hollow punch to make the card wads so I'll give that a try. Wonder if I should lube the card wads, or leave them dry? I was shocked to see the tc bullets do so poor; after all tc made the slugs for their rifles. I also tried the 350, 370, and the 275 maxi. They all shot poor. Maybe I should'nt use the wad with those maxis. Anyway I'm down to 1" at 50 yrds. with the 410 great plains, but have not tested at 100 yet. It would be fine if the tc bullets shot well as there are no elk or moose on the farm; only deer and varmits. If I stay with the 410, I wish I could get a mold as they are costly to buy.

I think you would come to respect and actually prefer something like a Hornady or Speer round ball if you gave them a try...much less expensive too

Hi Flincher,
You mentioned that you were shocked to see the T/C bullets do so poorly in your T/C rifle and I have to say the same thing about my 54 Renegade.

I bought two boxes of the 435 gr Maxi-Hunters and they are terrible. With about a 20 inch group at 65 yds. Round Balls are in the bullseye or 3 inch minus at the same yardage.

I am going to post a question about them on here, maybe someone can tell me that I need a smaller bullet or more powder or something of that nature. I have not shot them with the Goex BP though. I did get my 5lbs Goex last week and maybe I should try it with a heavy 100 grain or 120 grain load and see. I was thinking maybe I need more juice to spread them into the grooves or something like that.

I too have not had good results with TC Maxi's of every design and weight in my Renagade 54 cal Custom. My powders were 777 2F and Pyrodex RS. :(

I never had good luck with any of T.C maxi's of any type I use round ball for target and a civil war type hollow base mini for deer.
