Ok I have never shot a Green Mt. barrel, but I have two of them a .54 cal and a .32 cal that I'm putting together. What do you guys think of the Green Mt.barrels over a T/C barrel for accuracy useing round balls.Years back I had a T/C hawken 1:48 twist that shot really good groups at 100 yrds. What can I expect from the Green Mt.barrels.

The best shooting barrel I have is a G Mt 54 I-70 twist, deep rifling. TC I-48 don't have deep rifling. Their RB barrels with the I-66 I think are cut deeper. I shot them for my buddy and they shot good. Been a few years back. Back when, people were taking off I-48 TC barrels and putting on G MT barrels. TC changed their treads on breachplugs. Then you couldn't even get a breachplug. You had to send barrel to TC. TC then came out with their own RB barrel. Missed the boat for a few years. This is true becuase I shot against these guns(TC stock,GMT barrel). I was shooting a 54 Hawken,I-48, I did get a second place, but not the guns fault, as it was a good shooter. Dilly

If you're referring to getting a GM round ball barrel to use instead of a 1:48" barrel I have a couple pieces of info:

1) TC makes their own 1:66" round ball barrels...I have them in .45/.50/.54cals in cap and Flint, all extremely accurate; (TC's Fox Ridge store in NH is 800-243-4570)

2) GM's manufacturing quality has a slipped the past few years and every barrel I've gotten from them has had some sort of problem with them...had to send back two out of four.

T/C quit making barrels years ago. Green Mountain makes the barrels for them now. The quality is better when GM sells them to T/C than you would get from a GM in the white.

Well, I've been dealing with TC for 15+ years, have come to know a couple people there very well...I put that very question to them a couple years ago and they no, TC still makes their own barrels...guess I'll have to stay with that...

You're right on the mark about GM quality...GM barrels don't hold a candle to TCs quality.

Green Mountain makes TC barrels? I have a 45 cal TC barrel that I havent shot its an older barrel I think(has the clean out screw) I can only hope it shoots as good as a Green Mountain barrel

Didn't see the .45 on Fox Ridge today. I don't think they offer one anymore.
Well, it's still listed in their catalog (#34)...they discontinued the .45cal 32" x 1:66" a few years ago, but the standard 28" x 1:48" is still in the catalog as a caplock (no Flint) page 73...still make the .50/.54 x 1:66" in cap & Flint...you might check with them directly at 800-243-4570 about the standard .45...

Hey Roundball,

Knight now owns GM. Do you think it's just a coincidence the quality has gone down? :shake:

I've waited out sending my "helicoil barrel" back as they now again use normal breechplugs. At the time I was told that this was the "new manufactering process..."

Sorry to say as their barrels shoot very fine, when you sort out the problems.

As far as TC I've NEVER seen anyone with a warrantte problem, gun or barrel.

Nuff said.

If TC doesn't make barrels, and the article I read in the Rifleman is correct then S&W is going to be really upset.
The article said S&W wanted to use TC's long gun barrel making for their new rifles.

zonie :)

I have told you guys a million times that they use to have a good working relationship but don't anymore.

GM is now owned by Knight. You know MM (Modern Muzzleloading). Yes they still make good barrels.

If you think they are better than T/C barrels prove it.

I for one like T/C barrels better but do not get the selection I like from them.

I own modern T/C barrels made by them that kick a#$. I also own old ones that do the same. I agree that S&W bought them for the barrels. They make some of the best in the USA.

Unless you tour the plant like I have many times you have no clue as to how well T/C products are made. Their casting division makes Hitchner look bush league.

I have never done work at a company like this. They have a cafe that makes homemade meals every day for employees and custom sandwhiches for people that don't want a big meal. Free milk and such if you want a soda you have to buy it. Did I mention it was free?

I have a T/C .50 hawken I built from a kit in 1977. It sure is a great shooter. One hole at 50y. Do you think I have a T/C or a GM bbl?

So how do I get a hold of a T/C barrel for round balls, and what is the cost difference between Green Mt. and T/C.Thanks for all the info.

Call TC's Fox Ridge store on the plany grounds in NH...800-243-4570, option #3...
The TC barrels cost about $20 more but the difference in quality is immediately obvious, and they come with a 'real' lifetme warranty

I have bought greenmtnbarrels for all my rifles and every one( six or seven) shoot half to three quarter inch groups at 50 yrds.
I personally have never seen a bad barrel in fact I just rebarreled my 54 Leman and when I looked in the new barrel with a bore light I thought it had allready been lapped I coulden't see any cutting marks. Thats cherry.
:hatsoff:
also the deeper grooves will let you shoot a thicker patch more easly.

Thanks all.I don't mean to ruffle feathers, but I really like T/C even though it's not PC.I like a rifle that looks close to the originals, but has the better modern coil spring lock with life time warranty.I'm a hunter.I bow hunt with self bows.Been interested in blackpowder for awhile, but have never used one to take game. This year I'm putting in for an elk tag here in colorado. We'll see what happens.I'm putting together a .54 cal rifle all T/C parts, but a TOTW replacement stock.I can't get the stock till march.Cant wait to get it put together and try it out.
