Hello everyone,

Grew up in Oregon and have lived in AK for nearly 20 years.

Been interested in ML for awhile now, but have never taken the step to learn how to shoot one of these classic firearms. Well, this year I will change that.

Taking the state certification class at the end of April where they will have various types of ML's there to shoot. I am leaning toward either a percussion or flintlock as I like the appeal of primitive styles of hunting and have always loved trying to experience things from days gone by.

Ultimate goal will be to take a moose with a muzzle loader.

I like the forum and hope to learn and contribute to the community here.

You got lots of AK neighbors here, and you'll get lots of advice. From me, Get a flintlock, and never look back. I have two percussions and wish they were flints.

Welcome!

I shoot a percussion firearm, and love it. But, yeah, it would be nice to have a flint-lock to play with as well. Don't think I'd give up the capper to get it tho. Whichever you decide, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Hi Mike, and welcome to the forum. I am partial to flintlock guns myself, but started out with a self-built percussion. It was a learning experience and I feel like it paved the way for my flinters.

Welcome to the forum Mike. If you have some free time this weekend, come on out the the Alaska Gun Collectors Association (AGCA) Gun Show this weekend out at Raven Hall on the Alaska State Fairgrounds in Palmer. McKinley Mountainmen Muzzle Loading Rifle Club (M3LRC) will have a display set up and it will be manned by members of the club. We are all traditional sidelock muzzleloader shooters and we can tell you all about coming into the fold locally. Most of us will be happy to talk you about ML hunting opportunities, ML match shooting and historical rendezvous activities.

Sadly, the state muzzleloader certification class is not much geared towards traditional muzzleloaders...it's more towards those modern, unmentional on this forum, type of front stuffers.

Welcome Sir from another Alaskan glad you are going to jump in flintlocks work well on moose and boos

Tempted to head out to Palmer tomorrow, but I am fighting a pretty nasty cold right now.

Does the club do the Anchorage sportsmen show next weekend?

Welcome to the MLF Mike! Glad you found our camp. There are lots of friendly knowlegable folks here on the site with a lifetime of experience to share. Which ever ignition system you choose you will have a blast and be addicted for life.

Welcome to the forum. There's actually a lot of folk from Alaska on here. You've met a few already, and I'm sure more will chime in. Best wishes from a little further north.

I may be wrong since I was out of town last meeting but I don't think we are doing anything at the Sportsman's Show in Anchorage next weekend. I know that we'll have folks out to the AGCA show this weekend in Palmer though.

Mike,
Welcome to the MLF.Lots of members from
Alaska around here. Good or bad Sarah has put you
folks on the map.
Hope you will visit and contribute often!
I am snake-eyes :hatsoff:

Another welcome aboard. I'm on "the rock" with a couple of other members of the site, and there is a growing # of us traditional types over here.

You picked a good spot to land on the web.

Been stuck at home with a wicked sinus infection which turned into an ear infection (have not had one of those since I was a kid) so I have been reading lots of stuff online the last couple of days.

Looked at the local Mountain Man club website and I must admit, it really looks like fun. My wife thinks it is silly, but she will come around in a couple decades.

I work part time as an auctioneer, so I have been looking at auctions around the country searching for deals on a gun. I will come across the deal ofa lifetime sooner or later if I keep looking.
