Hello everyone,

I've been interested in muzzleloading for a long time and the recently introduced Montana heritage muzzleloader hunting season has compelled me to acquire a Lyman Deerstalker percussion in .50. My intent is to hunt deer and potentially elk/bear provided I can find some short conicals that shoot well. I've lurked this forum for a while looking at opinions on the rifle as well as sight options, powder/patch RB combinations as well as experiences with conicals. So far I've found a wealth of knowledge and it is much appreciated! Looking forward to participating as I figure out what works in my gun.

Welcome to the wonderful world of muzzleloading Mountain Stalker.

Montana held it's first muzzleloader season last year, about time too. I like that it is a primative weapon season, no modern muzzleloader stuff. I hunted with my muzzleloaders in S.E. and Central Montana mainly in the 1980s when B-tags were over the counter, some still are. I still hunt Montana nearly every year but the new muzzleloading season occurs a bit late on the calendar for me. Maybe over time we'll see some earlier seasons, wouldn't a season during elk rut be something.
