I am new to the Forum in the St. Louis MO area. Iam looking forward to buildin my first rifle. Any suggestons for a first tme build?

Hello, and welcome! As far as a first build, I might suggest a Lyman GPR. These are available in right and left hand versions and either flintlock or percussion. This will give you a bit of experience in finishing inlets and taking wood down to the level of the inlet parts, etc. Also some finishing of wood and metal parts. And the price is much less than a build of the more involved "kits", which are basically an inlet stock and parts that need to be filed and polished, drilled and tapped, etc.

Welcome to the forum.

What type of build did you have in mind? Some folks consider a "build" finishing a preassembled, in-the-white gun that only needs sanding, stain, and stock and metal finishing.

On the other extreme, others consider building from a squared blank, buying custom components that fit that particular style of gun and filing and fitting each separate component to larger assemblies.

In the middle of those extremes, is a variety of parts kits utilizing a 90% pre-inlet and shaped stock.

Each of those builds requires certain skills and tooling to complete. The more involved a build, more skills and more tools are required.

It all depends on what you consider a "build."

God Bless,
J.D.

Most likely a percussion kit to start. I have a 50 cal inline. would like to build a kit small cal. perhaps a .32, .36 or .40. Traditions has a Crokett .32 Kit Deer hunter model. Does anyone know if this would be a good starting point?

Please start by posting this in the "Gun Builder's Bench" forum.
