OK, so I have The Gunsmith Of Greenville County. I want to build my own gun someday, but right now I am short on $$$. In the mean time I was thinking perhaps a good way to spend a little I have saved up might be to buy another gunbuilding book or video to expand my knowledge. So, here are some of the videos I have been looking at online.

Building the Jim Chambers Long Gun Kits by James Turpin

Traditional Gunstocking with Mark Silver

Ron Ehlert/ American Pioneer Video Building Kentucky Rifles

Any opinions on these videos? Are they worth that much money compared to buying another book instead.

Any suggestions on any other books or videos?

I've got Ron Ehlert's cd and I think it is worth the money! I recommend it, but can't say about the others.

I'm new to gun building too and I love the James Turpin videos also. I really really like the videos done by Hershel House. Hershel's videos are a MUST in my opinion.

What style gun do you plan on building first? Do you want to put together a kit or build from scratch?

Best of luck!!!

I like the Lancaster style, but I am still pretty much up in the air of what I want. I'll probably definitely go with a kit like Jim Chambers or Track Of the Wolf. I just saw a youtube video about Hershel House he does sound like he would have good videos.

Thanks for the input guys.

If your up for a drive take a trip down on the outshirts of DC and have a talk with Wayne Dunlap. He aslo has quality kits and some of the prettiest cruley maple you ever seen.

"The Gunsmith of Williamsburg" with a very young Wallace Gussler is a great video. Not a how-to video, but gives a good perspective on authentic building techniques.

I also really like Homer Dangler's two videos (Part 1 & 2) called something like Building the Kentucky Longrifle, but I can't find them anywhere for sale. A friend let me borrow his VHS copies.

As far as books go, I consider both "The Art of Building the Pennsylvania Longrifle" by Chuck Dixon and "Recreating the American Longrifle" by Buchele, Shumway, and Peter Alexander to be essential.

I'll cast a vote for Buchele's "Recreating the American Longrifle", too. My beat-up copy is 35 years old and it's still my go-to reference.
