Guys/Girls,

Where is a good place to get a drop holster for a 5 1/2?

I'm not seeing any stock type for the OA on the net and don't need to spend as much for custom fancy leather as the gun.

Ideally, $150-$175 including belt. If there is a source I'm soliciting for help and just general oppinions on what some have and why they like it. :)

Two quality companies:

Rick Bachman has been doing authentic reproductions for many years and is very good.

El Paso Saddlery also makes very good items.

Have owned and used products from both outfits. Well satisfied. Rick Bachman used to set up at the Big Reno Gun Show and sell his leather. Think he was there last year. Quality leather, well worth the price. Think you will be pleased with either of these companies products.

Or you can do to a couple of old standbys go to a local gun show holsters can had for as little as $5. Try Cabellas seems they have some reasonable holsters as well.

 I'm checking 'em out

Cabelas? hmm, maybe. I'll look at least...Found something at Old Trading Post today. Looked O.K. enough to call them. Was told there is a bend able metal stave in the holster to help form the holster to the gun. I didn't question the guy, but that doesn't sound right. Two pieces of 1/8" leather, 1/4" total thickness. I forgot to ask, would that be considered or the same as lined?

Two years ago I had a guy that owns a local tack shop make two custom holsters and a belt for my 2nd Model Dragoon and my 1873 SAA. Total cost was $160. It required giving him the guns for two weeks so he could form the holsters about the guns.

The leather is horsehide, 1/4" thick. The holsters and belt are very rugged and carry even the 2nd Dragoon very securely. They will never roll over or deform even with years of use. I saved a great deal of money by not getting any fancy tooling work done. Yes, they're plain and not very showy, but they're for carrying heavy guns, not dancing at a barbeque.

The point is that it's possible to get custom leather work done in your price range that will meet your needs. Don't skimp on quality leather - thick horsehide is the best solution.

Two thin pieces of leather with aluminum between? Might actually work for a few weeks.

horse "butt" hide is the best going for stuff like that, alot more body with less thickness than cow hide, very little or no stretch but have not been able to get any in a long time.

All responses are welcomed,

Cabelas does have some nice looking holsters.

The Galco Model 1880 caught my eye, probably because it had a Ruger model in it which leads me to think the Old Army will fit. Pretty good reviews.

Would a cross-draw be a better performer for casual quick draw and all around carry instead of a high-ride model and?

I'll be annoyed getting ticked in the elbow from the grips on a strongside high-ride

Go look at the classified adds under "shooting accessories." Rock creek has a beautiful holster for sale (the Slim Jim style, I just bought the Mexican single loop myself) at a give away price. I have bought leather work from Rock Creek before and it is top notch.

He can tell you if it will fit an OA or not and if not he can probably make you one that will. Great guy to deal with and also a Forum member.

I just started hitting the junk boxes and found a Bianchin that was a perfect fit and the $10 carpenter belt you find at Lowes makes a great gun belt just color it with whatever you want
