Hi everyone, have a question, what's the best way to store a flintlock lock-wise? I'm thinking hammer fully down and frizzen closed or open? Seems there's less pressure on the spring with the frizzen open but only slightly more with it closed. Just curios if there's a correct way to position the lock during storage till next use.
Thanks
Brian

As you describe is fine. I'm no gunsmith or mechanical enjuneer, but I've been told by ekeespurts on the subject that a tensioned spring is not damaged if stored that way for long periods of time. Other ekeespurts have told me the opposite. :hmm: :idunno: For safety I prefer frizzen open.

Same here! Releases both springs and the touch hole gives those tiny spiders somewhere to play! :haha: Welcome to the menagerie there Squirrel Master!

I minimize the pressure on my springs by storing my rifles with the hammer down and the frizzen open.

None of my flintlocks will allow me to store them with the hammer down and the frizzon closed.

There is just not enough room.

I additionally stick a toothpick into the vent and use a tompion in the muzzle for keep critters outside the inside..... :v

Tompions are easily made from a section of wooden dowel(s); smallbore tompions from a violin tuning peg.

Perfect, that's how I've been storing mine, frizzen open and hammer dropped. Might have to plug the barrel also just to be safe. Thanks for all the replies!
