A great reason to get a REALLY cool pair of long gloves, "Gauntlets"...with fringe... :haha: :haha:

I must be doing something wrong?? I've never noticed the cap debris everyone talks about??

Here's mine  not exactly an H&A but a clone. Marlow worked his magic on the frame! I made the rest of it..

I've never seen one with set tgrs--how do they work, Could you show some pic's please ...Tom

The correct nipple for the H&A underhammer is threaded 1/4x32. They're available from TOW. If you have the correct nipple, don't overload, have a strong mainspring and the brass factory flash guard, you do not have to worry about getting your forearm damaged by a cap.

That is a lovely rifle Sir,
My gun is a stock rifle from Numrich, the offhand model.
One of these days it will be for sale. Need to thin the herd.
I take it you are a shaper fan. I own 2 Havir 8", one Sheldon 12 and 2 belt driven planers. I think I have a problem!

Ed C.

I WISH!!! can't ever seem to be in the right place at the right time ( and with extra $$$ in hand :idunno: ) when a shaper 'can' be found here..

The Metalshaper handle comes from the fact I built a LOT of my parts/guns by hand.. and a few of my Buds think I have a particular fetish for wanting to shape metal by hand using files and chisels. " give him a pile of scrap, a hacksaw and a set of files and he can build a gun! " was one of the campfire comments.. Flattering but I certainly appreciate "Working Smarter, not Harder" enjoy my lil lathes and my X2 mill sine I aquired them

Tom,

The double set trigger system is actually kind of superfluous! in use the front/single trigger in this design is very crisp and clean and could be used as a stand alone design..

It came about as I was talking at a rendezvous and someone mentioned "You can't build a double set underhammer, just not possible! you just can't do it!!" in my head, I think..Ok,'wanna Bet?" :blah:

the real trick for me was < in my head > I saw this with an internal mainspring and a Hawken-esque guard. I'm a fan of the Cook and Bacon style of actions and figured they might be the basis for the design. Now how to make it all fit into 3.5"+/- of working space???

Is a set trigger needed?? No not really?? a well designed and fitted UH is usually set up with a nice trigger and break.. So mainly it was just a challenge in my own head

Kinda agree.
Most that came from the factory were fairly hard/heavy triggers. This in the 1970s when I sold them from my shop.
The ones I got for my family to use were strictly target guns. I lightened the triggers with a little filing and stoning. They would not have been suitable for use in the field. But, since the design was so simple and parts readily available the triggers could have been swapped in minutes for use in the woods.
They were winners and the prices put many people into the ml game without breaking the bank.

to explain,

I'm not trying to be evasive about my design.. I kinda build with a TLAR ( That Looks About Right ) approach. never really draw anything out, just go by look and feel.

My machining is sort of rough at times, cuz I'm still learning to us a mill and such. so sometimes they result is not very pretty. and with a prototype design.. I figure out better ways to do it as I go along..

and Like I said, with a Cook type action, the double set it really not needed.. if I was to remake the action plate ( which I might ) the
gun would be set up to use a single trigger.

But I know I can make it work the other way

Now, that is one beautiful rifle! Next to yours, mine looks like a tomato stake. Mine may not look pretty but it shoots well and I like it. But, oh my, you do have one gorgeous rifle.

This is all I needed to see from a book like Herschle Logan's to be inspired...

and this is a modified Cook I made for another rifle

this one uses a two part system.. the trigger cams a lifter up, to left the 'spring sear' release the hammer..

and easy enough to add a half position on the hammer!!

Bill,

Thanks! Kinda anguish over the looks/fit I think?? My Bud says I'm somewhat obsessive!! :hmm: I just work until it gets as close to what my "Mind's eye sees" < as I can > then I call it DONE..
