Howdy all,
I had an idea. I'm not entirely new to black powder but I'm taking a deeper interest as I get older. I was thinking... Theres a company I came across on the net that would build a bullet mould to any specifacations ya want. What if ya took the base of a Lee conical for bp and combined it with the hollow point nose of a Lyman Devastator hollowpoint? For use in black powder revolvers. Also I have a crap load of 12ga deer slugs, can I salvage the lead out of them for casting for my Pietta 1838? I figure it must be some alloy thats harder than pure or soft but should be fine for now. Thanks, Dan

I'm wondering if the loading lever would damage the hollow point. I used to shoot conicals in my 1851 .36, and it took quite a bit of "oomph" to get them in there, and left a pretty good impression of the rod in the face of the bullet. I suppose you could remove the cylinder and load them with a special made tool and a mallet.

Is this a home defense thing, or is this for hunting? Bill

I was thinking of manufacturing a simple loading lever for use with a removed cylinder. Both self defense and survival hunting. I'm the doomsday type that believes the economy is going to go completely down the toilet. Also if it works well I thought I might some how make some money back on having to invest in a custom mould. As I recall i think it was $500. Also might be able to use a harder alloy at lower bp velocities. Use wheel whieghts, salvage slugs, etc. Appealing to people like me.

Someone beat ya too it, http://www.prbullet.com/ul45.htm

An heres a handy link for lead alloy's and their uses;

As far as survival hunting, learn to use a bow. Some trapping skills might come in handy too, :wink:

thanks for the reply. Was thinking I could use 45acp if i ran them thru a .451 sizer. Thats the thing though. .44 remi's use .451. I have a great interest in bp revolvers but theres not much of an ammo selection for them. I guess most folk who purchase them have different interests like reenactments and what not. Me, I grew up in Tucson, AZ and like I said before I'm a survivalist. Guess I'll cast up some conicals with my Lee conical mould and do some tests with salvaged deer slugs.

oops, my bad, those are 45 rifle bullets. Never studied ballistic coefficients and all that good stuff but I know pistol bullets are shorter and lighter.

Ya, I know about 45acp/ 45c. Those are .452. What I need is .451. The Lee mould I bought is .450 but rumor has it they come out a little big and work just fine. With the popularity of bp revolvers ya'd think some one would make such a critter as I was suggesting. There used to be a company named Buffalo Bullets but they only made conicals and they went outa business. Will do research and perhaps testing and if its a valid idea I'll have my self some part time work I guess.

oops, I forgot. They make the conversion cylinders fer em in 45 colt. :hmm: well then what about the issue of using a harder alloy? would generate higher pressures, wouldnt it? and the Lee mould has 2 lube grooves. Do lube grooves have any influence on safty regarding chain fires? Prolly safe with an over powder wad eh? I wanna hollow point for my Remi dern it! :(

Well... I've made up my mind. Some time in the near future I'm gonna have a custom mould built. There are quite a few companys out there who build them. Some very reasonably priced. Did another search this morning. What I want isnt made. The base has to be slightly smaller like the Lee conical in order to acheive proper alignment. Has to be .451 diameter. Also to the best of my knowledge the hollow point design should allow the use of standard/easier to find alloys. Should get some nice velocities and expansion. I have my reasons for my choices. I find it best to have one firearm that performs all the jobs ya need it to. After owning about a hundred different firearms over the years this is my choice.
