I was going through my vintage caps and came across this that I must have bought 40+ years ago. It has a 1/4-28 thread and know I had got it for my H&A underhammer to use only for hunting. It uses a small pistol primer and has a rather large hole to the charge in my opinion. I never tried it but I guess I was always worried losing my cap while breaking brush.

I thought the H&A underhammer nipples were threaded 1/4-32 and had a much longer thread.

The theory that the small primer would provide more reliable ignition was good. Especially for the synthetic black powders at the time.

In use, the unscrewing of the cap cover with the ease of loss, the difficulties encountered in removing spent caps and the slowness to replace the primer made those nipple replacements less than practical.

Yes the thread was much longer on the H&A and it may have been 1/4-32. So for what muzzle loader did I buy this?
As far as losing the cap, that bail you see on the cap is for, I guess, attaching a lanyard. Since I haven't used it I can't be sure, but with the cap cover removed when you push down a load the used primer might be pushed out?

H&A underhammers are found with both 1/4-32 and 1/4-28 nipple threads. I have no idea which came first or when the change was made. The nipples for these are made in several lengths in each thread size to match the barrel wall thickness.

Just and earlier version of the Acrasporter cap. I have one that uses small rifle or small piston primers. Only used it a few times at the range to try it out and found that removing the cap and the fired primer were quite time consuming and not worth the effort. However, in this day and age, with the scarcity of percussion caps around, this fixture could be worth using providing you have the necessary Small pistol or rifle primers. Personally, I would rather go flint lock. I can always find a rock that sparks if need be, and make my own BP if necessary. I think that is why the early frontiersman stuck to their flint locks long after percussion gun became the rule. They were afraid of having a useless gun should they run out of caps.

I have one of these that I purchased some 30 years ago for a Thompson Ctr. percussion. Never tried the darn thing, Didn't have any problems with caps, But I'm sure it would work fine. My intention was to use it for hunting but I never did. Squint

Look at the link Nipples - Track of the Wolf bottom of page and see both thread sizes and lengths are offered. The long thread isn't so much for strength but to put your fire closer to the main charge IMO. Like I mentioned it would be only be for hunting and a second follow up shot only needed to finish off a downed deer. That I took care of with my ROA I always carried in black bear country where I hunted. As a side note, I had a hell of a time in the County PD office when I wanted my ROA put on my concealed carry license. I got it added finally as I didn't want an issue while hunting. Buying and owning a C&B pistol is easy here in NY, but having it loaded is breaking the law.

thanks for the post. I have never seen or heard of one of those GIZZIES!! look's like it would work just fine. only problem that I see is changing it in the field after a shot it could fall onto the ground and become lost. now at the reloading bench a different out come.
