Also have some questions about hat blanks, mainly how to properly sew in a liner and what material is best to use.

Hat Blanks:

I used cotton, ticking material, and black, carpet thread with a thick needle... and did it by hand. I have a large grape so bought a hat jack from Harbor Freight to make sure the hat stays large enough for my head. AND...I have emergency patching material should I ever be out hunting and find for some reason my patching material is not within my shooting pouch.

Yup, pretty much figured one would use a thread and a needle......... and hand sew it...... :hatsoff:

Oh and what size jack, 2 ton? 10 ton? :idunno:

:haha:

As for hunting..... I'd be more worried by being slapped by the young ladies at the tavern than any low hanging branch.......

Okay, joking aside, how to determine how much material is needed, how is the lining specifically constructed and installed, how much bigger than my actual head size should the blank be?

I want a brown or grey blank (in wool) so I am considering Crazy Crow because Townsend seems to only carry brown and grey (Dove) in beaver felt and right now I don't want to fork out $160 for a beaver blank. Heck if I was going that route I'd buy one of their completed beaver hats for $200.

Ringel, I think your lining should be constructed as an inverted bowl -- a circular piece of fabric the diameter of the inside of the hat to be the inner crown, and a rectangular band sewn round the circle on one edge, the other to be stitched to the brim of your hat where your head goes in. As far as I can tell, this needs very fine stitching that does not show on the outside of the hat.

One way to do it is to measure your head dimension to know what size blank to order. Then measure the inside dimension of the hat blank. that is the length and probably around 5 - 6 inches high. You will be sewing one side to the mouth of the hat and the top of the material will then be folded over and stitched around a string, ribbon etc. This string you will cinch and tie up to form the top or crown of the lining, this will keep the hat from riding too low or at the level you choose.

Thanks guys.
My head measures 23 3/8 (loose measurement)so I'm assuming I should get a blank that size since I didn't measure it tight. Also what material would you all recommend for the trim? I do know sewing on the trim is slow and tedious if I want it to look good. As for fastening the sides and back I noticed most I have seen online have what looks like doubled "heavy" cord(?) holding up the sides (and I assume the back).
