hi out there....i purchased a hatfield 45 cal flintlock in the late 70's....trying to locate serial number, since i'm finally cataloging my collection...am i a total loser or what-can't find one...lock is case color case hardened with "hatfield" "warranted"...double set triggers...full curly maple stock, 45 cal on barrel, "for black powder only" on the barrel, "hatfield" on the barrel, octagon, browned barrel....can find no other marks....THANKS!!!!

The serial number on mine is on the underside of the barrel. Had to pull the barrel to find it. Make sure your screw driver fits the very shallow screw heads through the ramrod pipes, or you will bugger them up. BTW the barrel is made by Pedersoli and is a tack driver.

Thanks!!!! i thought the Italian barrels came somewhat later in the 80's...if there are no Italian proof marks on the barrel, can i assume its american made?????

thanks again...never thought about taking the darn thing apart..

I have had my barrel off of mine, which was purchased in the 1980s and have not found a serial number. Since muzzle-loaders are considered relics and not firearms manufactures are not required to put serial numbers on them or to keep up with where they are shipped. I ended up tapping my own serial number on mine for insurance purposes. I believe my 50 cal has an american made barrel. The 50 caliber barrels made by Pedersoli have a 1-48 rate of twist while mine has a 1-56 rate. Mine is very accurate.

:idunno: If that is the only mark on the barrel, then how do you know it is a American barrel ?

Hey 303 I don't know how many know this but the pedersoli guns use 1/4 x 28 threads on there nipples. just thought I would throw that out.

I didn't know that. I only have 2 Pedersoli flintlocks & have not had to change the vent liners. If the barrel in my .54 percussion mountain rifle is a Pedersoli it has been defarbed, no proof marks or date codes. It really doesn't matter though because it shoots better than I can hold any way.

I bought my Hatfield in late '74. A .50 cal Flintlock. As I remember the number was marked on both the end of the butt stock (under the iron plate) and on the inside of the lock. Mine is and has always been a super shooter. It's been my go-to hunting rifle for many years.....very reliable. Hence it's name "'Ole Reliable"!!! Horserod

Was it made by JP Gunstocks ? If so it could have a Orion barrel on it. I had a Hatfield & a McCoy years ago. I never took the barrel off the Hatfield (that I remember) but I know the Mccoy had a Orion barrel. It was very accurate. Very nice rifle for a production rifle. Beautiful wood, beautiful finish, and a Perfect browning job on it. The Hatfield was nice as well, but not as nice a piece of wood. If I remember correctly, you could order premium wood at a extra cost.

I don't know who made the gun. Got it off gunbroker. The only marks on it are 54 on the barrel and 54 (in chalk) under the butt plate and Hatfield (without the warranted) on the lock. Here is a thread I started when I got it. http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/281558/post/1299542/hl//fromsearch/1/
It had a lot of surface rust and/or crud on the metal parts but the bore was pristine after I cleaned the crud out of it, no rust or pits. The wood was covered with a film like tobacco smoke or cooking grease like it had been hanging up for a long time without being touched but cleaned up to very good.
