After finishing the range rod yesterday I was going to make a short starter with the left over brass but changed my mind.
I had this Hawken style sight that wasn't finish for a .54 Hawken flinter I'm trying to complete. I had bought this sight from Dixie gun works a few years ago because I like the look of it. I found Dixies description amusing it says the sight requires a "small" amount of file work. If you want the sight to look good it takes way more then a small amount.
I browned and seasoned it this morning and think it turned out rather nice. The only odd thing is the elevator must be some different type of steel from the main sight because it turned out almost a copper color, not bad just different. I haven't notched it yet figured to do that after Christmas.

That is one great job. I have seven hawken style rifles from Uberti, Austin & Halleck, CVA and Browning. I would love to put that sight on each but that figures out to $157 worth of sights and a lot of work. Maybe I'll do one of my Ubertis and leave the rest as is. You're not for hire are you ;)?

Lots of file work to make it look good. There's no good way told hold the sight other then by hand and my old hands locked up at least a couple of times when using the needle files. Of course old eyes need magnifying googles to see all the angles.

I had put this same style of sight on a transitional semi-custom .54 caplock I had years ago. The rifle was a half stock with double wedges but had a butt stock more akin to a eastern rifle.
