Michigan deer season opens Tuesday. Pieman, Sir Henry and myself are going to canoe into a spot on Monday and set up a primitive camp. Will just be one overnight and opening day hunting, but should be a good time. Unfortunatly we will have to wear more orange than we normally would, but we will be on public land and want to make sure we are seen. Hopefully we will see some deer. Looks like the weather is not going to cooperate on Tuesday, but that is ok.

no deer were taken on the hunt but i think it was a successful hunt by any standards. we canoed in around 3:30 in the afternoon on monday. had to use 2 canoes just in case we had to bring some meat back out with us. had the camp all set up and food cooking by 4:00. we had just enough daylight left to do a little more scouting and figure out where each of us was going to sit. we had a lite rain start falling by around 7:30, so we moved the fire under the fly and started the bs session.
i think don said the first boat went by going upriver about 4 am on opening day. by 6:30 there was a steady stream of boats going by. we couldn't complain much because come daylight we still had our area of the woods all to ourselves. of course it might have looked funny to all those city folks going by us to see 3 guys that looked like they stepped out of the history books camped along the river. i'm sure the ones that had a sense of humor were probably humming dueling banjo's as they went by.
each of us had the chance to see a buck but no deer was the only one who was able to get a shot off. sir henry had one that wanted to kiss him and i had the one that no deer seen go by me like his ass was on fire and his head was a catchin. i got a good chuckle out of watching him run by. we finally left around 2 in the afternoon because the weather was way to wet to sit when we had no blinds to sit in.
the day ended up with sir henry and i in a blind on the back of my place where i dropped a button buck ( i thought it was a doe) but what the heck it's good meat anyhow. i was happy with the fact that the flinter fired after being all day in the rain.
so all in all it was a good opening day.

Was definitely a successful trip, even tho there is no meat on the pole. I am just glad it was yesterday not today. Very cold and getting some snow today. Would not have been very comfortable out there without more gear than we had.

Sounds like a good time. I've got a buddy that live on Garden Peninsula(Garden City or something like that in the U.P.) along Puffy Bay on the lake. Haven't heard how he did yet. Hope you have a safe season.
