it has taken almost 25 years but i finally own some black powder weapons. I was 14 years old the first time i got to shoot a 54 cal rifle and have wanted one of my own since then. I also liked the look of cap and ball revolvers.
Three weeks ago I found a 54 cal lyman trade rifle and a 1858 model cap and ball 44 cal. at a garage sale that were affordable. and the missis said go ahead and get them.
I spent about two weeks just reading this forum then found a ammo shop that has a good selection of muzzleloading supplies. they were patient and answered all of the questions i had.
I shot the pistol last weekend and had a great time. I haven't shot the rifle yet because it did not come with a cleaning kit and i have not found one that I like. But I will in the very near future. Thanks to all of you that post here. It made my first time out a very pleasant one. I only had 2 caps fall off out of about 30 shots with no other problems.

welcome aboard defib! thank the missus and buy her something nice. greases the skids for the next purchase. oh, and there will be a next purchase! your hooked and thats not a bad thing. make smoke, be safe and punch xs. walrus

Welcome to the forum. It's the best source of info I have found yet! Lots of good people too!

All you really need for cleaning is a jag, some patches, and a bucket of warm water. You can use the ramrod that came with the rifle for a cleaning rod too. Go ahead and shoot it!

Have fun! :hatsoff:

Welcome defib, ya don't need to sweat about a cleaning kit. Read stuff here and piece one together to your liking. Sometimes, it's trial and error but that's part of the fun
