Hello from Montana!! I am surprised there are not more new members from Montana since we have a new muzzleloader season. I have been looking for a 54 cal caplock if anyone has a good one for sale let me know.

Welcome! Just keep an eye out in the For Sale section for a 54. They come up for sale fairly regularly. Putting in a Want to Buy ad would help, as well.

Welcome Docdox from un-sunny Florida. You are at the right place. The usual places
like GB are thin and high priced. Here there are good deals being made and also
there are builders at all levels to advise and help. And you can buy custom high
quality kit-built guns from members here--which is a here and now and you have
your pride in your possession.

welcome Doc! what part of Montana? anywhere near Bonners Ferry ID?
i may have a 54. i will look today. wife says they are breeding out of control!
I am right outside Missoula. I have a nephew that lives in Sandpoint so Bonners Ferry would be an easy pickup.

Welcome from central Montana. I'm beyond the age that wants to muzzleloader hunt in December. I would like to see it moved in between archery and general season. I sure don't wish anyone poor luck, but it's darn cold out there for bare fingers.

Welcome from Michigan. Had some great Indian tacos in Montana some years ago, not so far from where Gen'l Custer bought it.
To well learn muzzle-loaders I might suggest you read stuff from guys who used them for real. Specifically, The Muzzle Loading Caplock Rifle, by Ned H. Roberts. Roberts was taught by his uncle, based on Civil War experience. Roberts himself later developed the modern .25 Roberts and .257 Roberts rifle cartridges
