I recently inherited a Hawken 50 cal from my father. We had so much fun shooting it when I was a kid. It’s brought my interest in muzzleloading back.

Great to see another Canuck here.
This is a great forum for learning all and everything about muzzleloading.
It is tough living in Canada trying to feed our guns.
Caps & powder are not easy to find.
Very few shops carry black powder, if I may suggest give your approximate location and ask the gang here where you can find supplies close by.
I buy my black powder in quantity when I find it because I never know when I will find more again. Same thing for caps, when you can get a thousand at a time it saves stress and it is cheaper in the long run.
We used to be able to cross into New York and buy powder and caps, but we can no longer do that. US Homeland Security can and will grab you, cease you goods and give you a fine. It is not against the law to buy these supplies, but it is an offence to be in possession of these items.
Being as old as I am, it was great prior to 9/11 to travel south to the USA, to go to Friendship, the many rendevous and share many great times and meet wonderful people.
But now all that has changed, even worse in these times of Covid-19
For more information contact me personally and I can give information not advocated here on the Forum.
I live south of Ottawa, we have a great gun range just outside of Prescott, Ontario.
Happy to have you here!

Welcome to the forum from North Carolina. Grew up in WNY near the Canadian border, and as @F.G. Ford stated, times were different. A decent portion of the LGS sales were to customers from north of the border. Exchange rate was current and posted at the cash register.

Enjoy your reborn interest in muzzleloading.

Just a warmer into the bank as to what Canadians [only, this year, for obvious reasons] get up to over in Alberta -

Rob [him with the moustache] has a great Youtube channel with TONS of m/l stuff on it. Military, thought.

Welcome to the forum from Nebraska! The TC Hawken was my first to enter into club shooting events. Hawken style is loved by many.

Welcome aboard my friend.

What manufacturer .50 do you have?

Flintlock or Percussion?

Manufacture such as TC, CVA, Traditions, or maybe a custom built?

Anyway, we look forward to hearing more from you my friend.

Respectfully, Cowboy
Hi Cowboy
It’s an Investarms percussion. I really don’t remember what year Dad bought it but it was the mid ‘80’s. We had such a hoot shooting it. Now my son is really wanting to get into black powder. I love the slow pace father son time that comes with this style of shooting.
Thanks for the hello, Roger

Muzzleloaders are fun because they require attention to detail. You should have good bonding with your son using this rifle and teaching him about patience, attention to detail, responsibility, and do it all with the phones turned off.

I've shot my CVA Bobcat .50 percussion for hours, alone, at the range. Swabbing between shots. Smoking up the place. I did get some less than friendly looks when shooting just before rifle season. I've seen men stand in line for a bench. SMH.

Welcome aboard from Buffalo NY. I too am introducing my son to muzzleloading to learn how they work, safety,, and just the fun of having control of almost all aspects other than the weather.
