Hello to everyone,
I am a 22 year Army Cavalry Scout retiring this summer. My son bought me a lyman plains pistol kit for christmas and in researching blackpowder how to's, stumbled upon Mountain man/Trapper reenacting. I found it very exciting so I finished her in brown and gave her a dark walnut stain and boiled linseed oil seal. I have put about 125 rounds through her so far and can't wait to put a hundred more. I have been behind modern weapons that would make most men jealous (machine guns, cannons, missile launchers, grenade launchers etc) but I don't think I have ever had as much fun as this little .50 cal smoke belcher gives me. I am heading to my first mountain man Rendezvous tomorrow just south of Olympia WA. I hope to get a Lyman Plains Rifle sometime later this year to round out my weapons. My father in Florida just told me he started a pistol kit back in the late 60s but never finished it. He said he would dig it out of the shed and send it to me. I can't wait to see what kind it is. I look forward to reading everyones posts and learning more about this facinating new world of old fashioned shooting.

OldSarge,
Welcome from Oregon!
Come on down and "make smoke" with us sometime. You are always welcome in our camp (ForestHills Black Powder Brigade}
Let us know what that old unfinished kit gun your dad sends your way turns out to be!

As you were :)

Ill be at Petes Rondy this weekend. (white eastern fock & breeches with a brown tricorn.

Be advised the ole cadgers prefer the word firearm to weapon. We are killing gongs this weekend, nor op-4!

They busted my chops for months.

I did make it to the trade show, I picked up a bunch of stuff to include a beautiful wooden canteen from a gentleman I met at the Paul Bunyan sportsmans club a couple weeks earlier, his brand is a "B", I can't remember his name but he does great work. I am afraid I won't be able to meet you on Saturday as I will only be there on Thur and Fri. I work on Saturday. I might not be able to come back on sunday either. Will you only be there Sat and Sun?

Thanx for the link thats one I hadn't found yet in all my searching. I will look for you at the show. You will probably be able to find me pretty easy I'll be the guy without any period clothes. All I have as of yet is some camp gear and my pistol stuff. See ya there

Yessir I will tell ya'll all about it...heck you probably couldn't shut me up about it if ya wanted to. Thanks for the invite and the same goes here. C'mon up and sit a spell we'll make lots of smoke and booms and tell some stories around the fire.

Johnny,
what kind of rifle are you making? is it your first? I am interested in making one as well like I said so I would be interested in learning as much as possible. I have bought some patterns for a shirt but am not yet decided on what I want to wear entirely.

Nothin's quite as addictive as blackpowder.
Just wait 'til you get that rifle.

Sorry I didnt see you there. Lovely weather we had on saturday.

My second rifle. My first one, the EX got when we parted.

I researched all the places you can get rifle parts from. Found the finest barrel and lock and trigger set I wanted to afford.

Then wrapped it all in a fine piece of TN black walnut.

The style is an post rev war Virgina Sheetz school rifle. All iron hardware (none of that fancy brass or silver here).

45 cal (can hunt in WA with it).

Wont bore you with the other detail, you might not know what it all means yet.

PM me is you need help with anything.

Welcome to the forum!

I'll be headed back to Ft Lewis Fall 2008 and cannot wait to get involved in the black powder groups in the area. We still have a house in Steilacoom that we plan on returning to.

Have fun and we'll see you around Ft Lewis!

Doc

Awesome, we hope to stay in the area after I retire so we will probably cross paths. See ya out there :)

Real sorry I missed you too, I had to leave Friday evening because I worked Saturday. I do have some pictures and will post them in the photo area momentarily. Your rifle sounds like a nice one. I am a functionality kind of guy too, I don't know if I would want a real fancy gun. I think I'd be affraid to shoot it. That piece of black walnut you used sounds like it would be nice though.

Never be affaid of any modern BP rifles, they as safe as kittens.

Ill have it finshed by Fall Harvest which will be at the same place. I should have it for 7 Rivers also. Thats a rondy you dont want to miss!
