Just a quick hello from a new guy on the forum. I was given a Traditions Hawken percussion rifle a few years ago by a friend who I helped move. It was in bad shape - severely neglected. I cleaned of the outside up the gun but only had moderate success de-rusting the interior of the barrel. So I hung it on the wall for a decoration.

Recently, my interest in traditional muzzleloaders was kindled by a visit to Colonial Williamsburg. Don't know if it was the entry hall to the Royal Governor's Palace, the trip to the 2nd floor of the town magazine, the march with the Continental army down the main street and subsequent firing of their muskets on the courthouse green, or the visit with the gunsmith that did it (or all of the above) - but I now find myself hooked!

So, while I decide on which production traditional blackpowder long gun to procure, I've pulled the Hawken off the wall and am in the process of de-rusting the bore in the hopes of getting it up and running. Oh, and of course - enjoying lots of good reading here on the forum.

Welcome to the ML Forum!

I watched a film called "The Gunsmith of Williamsburg" in 9th grade metal shop class. That film got me and a couple friends hooked on muzzleloading. GW

Welcome to the site. My gggrandaddy took a Yankee bullet to the head at Fredericksburg. But I'm not mad about it!!

Welcome to the forum! I'm just a little North of you. A Traditions Hawken is the rifle that got me into this hobby a long time ago.

Thanks for all of the "welcomes", and the well-wishes for the rifle. I got the de-rusting complete. Of course, there are some noticeable pits in the bore. I put it back together yesterday and am hoping to get it to the range sometime this week for a test run.

My Great Grandfather was there at both battles. The first, they were "only lightly engaged and suffered little loss".

At Marye's Heights, they were part of the Light Division of the Sixth Corps, the 61st leading the right column's successful advance. They lost 3 officers and 74 men.

After the War was over, the animosities subsided. The 61st ended their Regimental History with the words of the popular song, "The Blue And The Grey":

"With love and tears for the Blue - tears and love for the Grey."

:hatsoff:

From near Fredericksburg Ohio, welcome! (The hamlet of about 20 people in Warren County, not the big town of Fredericksburg Ohio of 423.)
