I live in oregon east of Portland on the foothills of the cascade mountain range, I currently rifle and trad archery hunt locally. I love building fetching and tuning my own arrows. Next Elk season I plan on doing the NW cascades muzzle loader elk hunt. I am not totally new to muzzle loading I have owned a 45cal cap pistol for a few years.
I was thinking of the 54cal and shooting conicals out of a hawken pattern rifle. What would be a good barrel twist? What am I giving up in not going with a more modern muzzle loader? Oregon has, it seems some of the more restrictive muzzle loader regs, as in no scopes or sabots and open ignition anyway so I'm not sure if that levels the playing field a little anyway?
Also any help general advice greatly appreciated.
