Hello muzzleloading forum.

I am an avid shooter of cap and ball revolvers. Not an expert by any means but have been doing it for about a decade now. I cast my own round lead ball and have recently been doing some research on how to make one's own powder and caps.

It seems that percussion caps are made of pure unobtainium nowadays.

I've got a little over 400 caps and I don't shoot that often so it's not critical just yet.

In the good news department I did find Schutzen ( sp ) 3F black powder for $23 a pound with no minimum order and they $20 hazmat fee. They also had Swiss but that's over 30 a pound.

I have not shot Swiss before and have been happy enough with the schutzen. Do you think the Swiss is worth spending about $10 more a pound?

I would name the place but I don't know if I'm supposed to do that. I'm not here to sell anything but I figure anyone finding black powder in stock somewhere is good news.

I have seen that. Thank you for that information. I'm still sitting on about 430 caps and I don't shoot all that often, so it's not getting critical yet.

But it is nice to know that it's available. I believe his prime all compound is essentially black powder with some sand added as a frictioning agent.

But as far as the exact ratio.... I have no idea. But I do understand you can get enough to make a couple thousand caps for $20. Matches can also be used in a pinch. But even those are becoming harder to find nowadays.

I have looked all over this town for regular book matches and none can be found. I wanted to find some for the store I work at so that when people buy tobacco we can offer them a book of matches if they are regular customers.... Like stores used to do a long time ago.

Even toy cap gun caps seem hard to locate now.... At least looking around the dollar stores that used to sell them here maybe 5 years ago.... The last time I bought any.

Makes you an expert in my eyes, as that's about a decade longer than me.

I think the caps situation is resolving. I've been able to find #10, #11, and musket caps. Not all at the same place or even in the same town, though.

I've never used Swiss. DuPont/Goex used to have a plant 60 miles away and that is what I have been shooting for 48 years. I get mine from www.powderinc.com since New York State made a law that retailers have to store blackpowder in a seperate building that customers cannot enter. What sporting goods store has a "spare" building to store blackpowder for sale close enough for a clerk to walk and get it?
