I built my son in law a .50 Traditions Hawkens kit. On the fifth shot the nipple split in two. I replaced it with a Spitfire nipple snd never had that problem again. I find that the factory nipples are not the best quality. Whenever I get a percussion rifle, new or used, the first thing I do is to replace the nipple. Never had a problem with Spitfires ( knock on wood)

It would appear that the molecular structure of the tubular structure was afflicted with an inherent imperfection which, upon repeated percussive strikes, initiated an inevitable bifuraction of the whole. It happens.

Pure unadulterated poetry!
