Help me save my GPR 50 barrel!!! I screwed it up!

I was out sighting my Lyman GPR 50 in for deer season coming up in 10 days and as I was cleaning it, the stupid plastic Outers cleaning jig stripped itself out of the cleaning rod and I couldn't get it to grab the rod to pull it and the now wedged patch out.

So I finally got me screw thing you use to get a stuck ball out and all I accomplished was totally boogering up the whole mess in the bottom of the barrel and nothing will get it out.

IS it time to order a new barrel and be done with it. I don't know what else to do.

We just had a thread about stuck stuff and using a piece of thin tubing with an OD the same as you bore diameter. Slide it down the barrel to the bottom and hopefully it will pull the mess out. And no more plastic jags in yer muzzleloader. Plastic and tradition don't get along together. ::

 

Take the nipple out, and dribble 5grs. of powder into the hole, replace the nipple, re-cap, and fire into a soft "back-stop", then pick up the ramrod tip, clean it out and epoxy it back on the ramrod. After epoxy is dry, drill a small hole thru the tip AND ramrod, then put a "pin" thru the hole (small nail of proper size) trim the nail off close to both sides of the tip, and "peen" the nail on both sides and file off smooth.

You might try one of those co2 canisters and try to push it out with air....like you do with a patched ball when you forgot the powder

You might try blowing it out.
By that I mean, take the barrel off of the stock and remove the nipple. (I'm assuming it's precussion).

Take the barrel down to your friendly filling station, or a auto repair shop and ask them if they will blow high pressure air into the nipple hole.
If your in luck, your jag and whatever else is down there will blow out.
Oh, be sure it's pointed in a safe direction when it is blasted. Sometimes these bore obstructions can come out with a lot of velocity. ::

I dont think your at buying a new barrel yet. As a last resort, you can remove your barrel and put it in a strong vise. Protect the sides of your barrel from the vise jaws by using 1X wood. I use soft pine, but I would imagine hardwoods would work just as well. Find a wrench that will fit the breech plug and remove the breech plug. You can then simply push the mess out through the breech end of the barrel. If you dont think your up to this, find a gunsmith. This job should not take more than a couple of minutes and might do the job while you wait. It might cost you $30 or so, but that is a lot cheaper than a new barrel. Your not the only one who has ever had this happen, been there done that.

Howdy -
Normally I would be in complete agreement with Mr. Yanta - soak the entire shebang down with WD-40, remove the breechplug, and drive the mess out with a stout dowl rod.

However, I just took a look at the GPR details on Track of the Wolf and I see that the GPR has a "Patent Breech with Snail" much like the T/C. If the GPR is torqued as tightly as the T/C, then a special breach wrench would be required; and it took me a tremendous amount of yanking, 3 oak boards in the vise (padding the barrel), driving solid brass shims into the "special breach wrench" to keep it from slipping, and a 3 foot pipe handle to de-breech a T/C. Ouch.

By all means try zirc pressure fittings or CO2 ejectors first. But if that fails, as Mr. Yanta suggested, a good 'smith can handle it somewhat inexpensively.

I have tried putting powder into the nipple hole replacing the nipple and shooting a primer and I now have it half way out after about 8 shots. It isn't moving anymore and I think that there is a hole in the mess that is letting air pressure get out from behind it. I will keep it up and let you know how it goes. It is wedged in there good.

I got it!!! Took about 15 shots. After it would get so far down the bore it would stop and I would ram it back to the bottom and it seemed after I fired the cap it would end up farther every time. Finally it shot across the room. Thanks for the advice, it saved my barrel and I am ready for deer muzzleloading season come December 20th!

Oh, and, NO MORE PLASTIC JIGS!

ONly brass from now on.

I believe from now on you should always reseat the obstruction after each attempt to shoot it out. Otherwise,dangerous pressure builds up with terrible results, the least of which would be a bulged barrel. Sounds to me as if you were lucky. Good luck hunting.

J James,.... 5 grs. of blackpowder ain't gonna blow up a muzzleloader barrel with a "light obstruction", but it is "wise" to be on the cauious side and re-seat any "obstruction" back down to the chamber when use'n this method!! :thumbsup:

i was just wondering if a good patch worm would have gotten it outwith some t/c/13 or old thunder down the barrel,had the same thing happen to me a while back and thats how i got it out

I tried my patch worm, but the jig stuck up too far above the patch it was wedged in. There was nothing for the worm to grab ahold of.

On another note, I did eventually ram the stuck jig and patch down to the breech after every attempt to blow it out with a powder charge in the nipple hole, but not the first several times. I can see how there could have been a danger to this if it had been a more powerful charge, but with the little powder I was able to get into the charge hole under the nipple, I don't think it was possible to do any damage to the barrel.
