Some of you may find it innerest'n, thet with as liddle as 10 grs. of blackpowder in a "patent breech", the ball can NOT be "seated" down on the powder-charge,.... yet ther are no "ill-effects" from fire'n such a load even tho the ball has then become a "bore obstruction".

Sorry Patsue. I didn't read your posts well enough at first (it was very late at night) I was only trying to lean towards safe practices, not trying to be an alarmist or make you feel that 3 grains would explode your barrel. A quick story. I went to a local rondy and bragged to my girlfriend about my muzzleloading skills etc. etc. I got up to the first station and dryballed the first load! Had to borrow a ball puller from a women next to me. Very humbled was I.

I know the co2 discharges are not traditionsl but they work real well,I pick one up last year and they work great.

Hi Patsue, I am happy to see you were able to unseat that plastic jag. I have a .50 cal.,perc.,GPR aswell, and as you have, I have had things become lodged downbore. This disscussion board is a Godsend, the folks here are very knowledgeable. I only wish I had this resource 13 years ago! I agree w/ all the advice you were given here.If I may make one small point. You may find it to your advantage to not seat the obstruction down against the breach plug. This will give you a tad more space to work a small amount of powder into. Before you pop the cap run a small amount of lube down to the obstruction to reduce friction on it's way out.Oh well, I'm sure you thought of this ,as did the others, I just did'nt see it so I thought I would mention it. Good luck in the deer fields! I killed an 8 piont 27 Nov. :m2c:

Actualy the breechplug on the Investarms/Lyman GPR, does have a hollow "powder chamber" much like the "patented breechplug".
It's been a while since I've had one out, but if memory serves me correctly, the Lyman's powder chamber will hold approx. 10-15 grs. of powder behind a fully "seated" roundball.

Looks like you just wasted a good opportunity to buy a new barrel :boohoo:

rollingb,

The powder chamber in a Lyman (Investarms) breech plug has a capacity of 40 to 45 grains of powder.
