Early 18th Century Irish:

"Up the long ladder and down the short rope
To H#!! with King Billy and God bless the Pope!"

For a patriotic Englishman, the blessing and curse might be reversed.

German - Bertolt Brecht, actually, but who'd know?

"Soldaten wohnen, auf den Kanonen"
(Soldiers live by/on the guns)

or homemade: "Schrott ist besser als jedes Messer" (shot is better than any/every knife).

I have a list of original powder horn rhymes and sayings, but can't find it at the moment. This is the only one which I can find:

"Alle Kunst ist umsunst wenn ein Engel auf das Zundloch brunzt."

Which, loosely translated, is - "All artifice is lost (there is nothing
you can do) when an angel pisses in your touchhole."
