Old pewter has a lot of lead in it. The new stuff doesn't. You can use cerrobend in place of pewter for these kinds of projects. The product melts at a little over 160 degrees, much less than the boiling temperature of water. That makes it safer to use, and it is just as easy to clean up, polish, file, etc. You can get cerrobend at TOTW, or DixieGW.

Paul, that melting point is too low for a using knife. If it ever got hot water on it, the pour would be gone. Lead free plumbers solder would be much better. Even if he used leaded pewter, it would not be harmful for a bolster, unless he tried to eat it.

Seein' as how I usually dispense with the glasses down at the shop in favor of a more period impression, thanks for that bit of wisdom!

Thanks for the tip - I did a cut'n'paste and stored it in my 'tips' folder. Now I just need to find out where to buy second hand (or even first hand) pewter.

I don't know if there is lead in it or not, but places like goodwill or other thrift stores tend to have a lot of pewter cups, plates, etc. Just a thought.

Frost

BTW. That is a very nice knife. I like the hammon line.

I have only used it 2 times but the lead free plumbers solder is nice to use. Its silver and tin and shines up nice
