My old dad shot my ROA like that one time and tattooed his forearm.

I wonder if the old timers used leather gauntlets or forearm/wrist guards with those revolver rifles? I guess a buckskin shirt worked - remember Arthur Hunnicutt's character, "Bull", in "El Dorado"?

I know later versions had that trigger guard grip thingy to hold on to..

When the character Bull fires that rifle we see his forward hand come off the rifle either due to recoil or to powder flash...,
