That really depends on the therapist. My wife had her right knee operated on by one of the top surgeons in the country. She was referred to a physical therapist, who told her to do a stair step machine until she could not do any more. Well he didn't realize that she takes things literately and he forgot about her. When he finally checked on her she had re-injured her knee and her surgeon was not happy with the therapist.

Fast forward about 30 years and she had to have a right hip replacement and once again referred to different physical therapist. That one was incredible and had her back on her feet in about two weeks, without any pain.
 
Good to hear, hard as it might be, do what they tell you to do. 6 years since my back was fixed and it is still good as old. Amazing what they can fix now.
