Back in 1975 a rifle could be built for less than 300 dollars, but good wages was 5 bucks an hour, mostly 2 to 3 bucks an hour.

300 bucks adjusted for inflation is 1,442 dollars in 2020.

There you go, not a heck of a lot of difference, if one wants to build a custom rifle.
