Holster recommendations

Hi guys, I'm new to site and just purchased a Pietta Model 1858 New Army Buffalo Brass Frame .44 Caliber Black Powder Revolver...I am looking for some recommendations for holster selections for this gun...is it too long for shoulder holster..don't have enough money to buy several so looking for advice from experienced hunters..sorry main use would be deer/hog hunting but carry and concealed isn't out of the question...thanks and God Bless....terry

I recommend a cross draw or bandolier type holster. I like the bandolier holster positioned high up under my left arm, similar to a shoulder holster. This keeps the gun above the brush and briers and is easy to cover in bad weather. It makes sitting more comfortable and the gun easy access.

I use a military full flap holster carried on my left side but forward as a cross draw when carrying on my waist. The flap protects the gun from leaves and sticks from getting in the cylinder and frame area. I have three different holsters for my 1851 Navy. The bandolier is the one I use the most in the field.

Fistmil has good ideas, and if you are handy with leather, or have a friend who is, get a piece of 8-9 oz veg-tan cowhide. Wrap your pistol in Saran Wrap, soak the leather in tap water at the sink, then wrap the leather around the pistol from the barrel side. Leave plenty of leather sticking up past the grip to make a belt loop and form the wet leather around your gun, leaving room to trim and sew it up. when dry, trim to shape and use an awl for the holes.Sew up your belt flap first, then the seam of the holster. Use leather glue to hold your belt flap and seam together while you puch the holes and sew it up. I use artificial sinew to sew it using a saddle stich. You can add a slight cant to the angle of your belt loop. Good luck, hope this helps. George.

I found that the long barrels on the caplock revolvers make it difficult to easily draw a pistol unless the holster is a cross draw. So if you are going to need a pistol quickly cross draw is the answer. Making your own holster is easy. Just wrap the pistol in Saran Wrap and then wrap it in wet leather. After the leather dries, sew it up and cut off everything that doesn't look like a holster.
