I was doing a little looking around for some Lead to cast up and found that the USCG is trying to offload 38,000 lbs of 95% pure. :shocked2:

It's being auctioned off as a single lot - for pickup only - from Curtis Bay (MD) Coastguard Yard.

As of yet, the bidding stands at $50.00. Any of you East Coasties got a truck? :hmm:

(Claude: I have a link to the Government auction. Your call.)

I live 5.79 miles from Curtis Bay port. I have a F-150 but I think I'd need a rail car

Well, the auction ends in 9 days. Whoever buys & stores this lot will be able to make a bunch-o-money.

I wish I could bid on it, but MD's just a bit far from Chicago.

Lessee.... 38000 pounds....times 7000 gr/lb =266000000 gr. divided by 325 gr/ball=818461, 20 ga. roundballs.....nope, not interested, don't have the room for all those roundballs... :rotf:

38 trips and you could have it :winking:

:hmm: I only have around 480 lbs myself I wouldn't mind having an extra 1,000 or so :haha:

Lets see. If someone bought that for $100 and sold it for $1.00/pound he'd make $37,900 profit. :hmm:

$37,900 profit minus maybe $2000 for the stuff to melt it down and cast it into usable sized ingots, minus trucking fees to get it home, minus license fees, minus haz-mat fees, minus income tax, minus advertizing...Seems like he would only owe someone $1.67 when all is said and done.

Zonie :)

38,000 pounds :shocked2:

That's over 1.5 million .50 caliber roundballs and over 1.1 million .54 caliber roundballs.

:hmm:

That's about 10,000 hours of casting.

Where would you store 38,000 pounds of lead? Not in the garage, the foundation would sink in and your house would fall over :)

Sounds like the government seized Paul Bunyon's lead stash for past due back taxes...

Seems to me I heard they use huge amounts of lead for ballast in ships. Maybe the Coasties de-commissioned one.

That would be a hard sell to the wife. :nono:

When I was a Coast Guardsman our self-righting motor lifeboats had lead attached to the inside hull near the keel to make them bottom heavy (or top-heavy when upside down). They also made the boats maneuver like pigs, and ran nearly as fast as snails.
Some guys got off on that up-side down business, but I always liked my eggs AND boats sunny-side up. Anyway, these boats each had a few TONS of lead down below.

A 10lb sack of 00 Buck last my .35 cal a whole year. I'm not ready to start castin' balls for the .56 smoothy. 'Sides Ah cain't afford to lose $1.67 on the deal. :shake:

Anyone got a site that can work out postage to Australia for that lil' e-bay deal......?
Smokey :hmm: :) :rotf:

purchase it cheap and sell it right off to a scrap yard..then buy your ammo--- :shocked2:
