Any of you guys know any techniques or links to websites that show techniques on how to make home made caps?

Brass is an easy enough metal to work with. I figure once you swedge the cup all you have to do is pour the primer. I'd bet mixing and pouring the primer is the most sensitive part of the operation.

Not that I'd actually like to make my own. The store bought ones are good enough for me, but I'd like to be a little more educated on the process.

some years ago, out of idle curiousity more than anything else, i bought a gizmo from DGW. it was called tap-a-cap or somesuch, and was a kit which allowed you to form your own percussion caps from the sides of a disemboweled soda can. i made about a hundred of these little guys- the actual explosive is provided by punching out the working part of cpas from a kid's capgun and slipping them into the bottom of the cup. it's about the same size as #11s, so they fit fine on the nipple. we were in the midst of moves, building a new house, living in a tiny apartment, and so on, so (since i didn't have time to shoot anyway, and they were all locked away) i loaded a BP revolver with these guys, normal load, powder, shot card, grits, shot card, ball and put the whole thing away. about 12 or 14 months later i snuck into the woods (they were my woods, after all) and let 'er rip. all six cylinders fired without hesitation. you might want to look at the DGW catalog.

good luck

I've seen that thing on DGW but was too skiddish to spend the money. Nice to know it works. I might get me one in case somebody makes the real stuff illegal.

I can't seem to get the SEARCH thing to find it, but there have been several postings about the Tap-O-Caps.
These seemed to have mixed results but most of the replies were not very positive.

Things like "I bought one and finding cap gun caps that would produce enough flash was hard to do..." and "The only way I could make them work is to put two caps into each one." and "Fooling around with trying to cut the cap gun caps down to size and get them into the shells was such a pain in the ass that I quit trying." and "I bought one and tried it years ago. It's still around here somewhere." seems to stick in my mind.

Your results may vary.
Zonie :)

Sounds like it's time for another product test. Anyone got one?

It's not hard to obtain caps in my area, at least
at the present time. I think I'll stick with my
CCI and Remingtons, both have served me well.

I just bought 700 number 11 caps at Dicks for I think .97 per hundred... Unless they are aweful tough to get shipped, I don't think you could buy the materials for hat.
Just my nickels worth,
Bryan

See if any of these track to what you want:

  :hatsoff: to Claude! :)

Yup, that's it.

Isn't it great when the Boss helps out?

You folks will be interested in some of these comments in the Link Claude found.

It goes to prove that ole Zonie ain't totally senile yet.

Again, thanks Claude. Now you can go back to your office. I think your "Department Assistant" (formerly known as a Secretary) has placed your copy of The Wallstreet Journal on your desk.

You're welcome. (taking off my spurs and putting my feet up on my desk)
