For this morning's range trip I experimented with some different lube....because I had recently bought a quantity of OxYoke .015" plain cotten prelubed patches real cheap, but found they were very dry, with only a trace of natural lube in them.

Since I had also recently bought a bottle of Hoppes #9 BP cleaning solution & patch lube to try this winter on dry, low humidity days, I decided I'd experiment now.

So a week ago I squirted a little of this liquid Hoppes BP lube into a bag of these particular Oxyoke patches and used them at the range this morning.

The Hoppes is outstanding...fouling was just about non-existent from 50grn charges of Goex 3F...noticeably slippery when seating a ball...should work really well this winter on dry days.

The base ingredient of that lube was kerosene. Have they changed it? I had a whole bottle of it years ago and gave it away because of the smell.

Don't know if it is the basic ingredient or not, but yes, the label says it contains kerosene...and it smells just like regular Hoppe's #9 cleaner, which I've aleways liked...sort of like Hoppes signature in a lot of their gun products I think.

But on this point of a kerosene ingredient, I hesitated before buying it because on the one hand, kerosene is some sort of petroleum byproduct, and we know that petroleum oils create fouling nightmares with BP residue...yet, here this is, specifically designed for use as a "BP Cleaning Solvent & Patch Lube".

So I figured either the type or amount of kerosene must be such that it doesn't create a fouling issue, indeed, it's supposedly a cleaning/lubing solution for BP...and with Hoppes being such a well established, credible company in the firearms industry, I bought it to try it.

And as it turned out this morning at least, it was outstanding...virtually no fouling, very easy loading, no difference in accuracy, and when I went through my cleaning procedure back at the house, almost nothing came out of the bore in that hot soapy water...very impressive.

I'll know better after trying it several more times during other seasons, temperature, humidity, and also with 2F.

I have a 9.5 ounce bottle of hoppes 9 plus,is this the same stuff? Its been around along time, must have cause the sticker price says $1.75.I belive bannana oil is the main ingredant ive read sum wares. The bottle says it contains -
nitrobenzene, ammonia, denatured ethanol and kerosene. All are probably just a trace of each most likely.

Roundball,
Thanks for the report. I have four bottles of it I got on Ebay for around $1 per bottle and I haven't tried it yet. I will give it a try when I get back from the sandbox.

roundball,
I have never used it as a lube but as a cleaning
agent i don't think you can beat it. Been stuck on Moose
snot as a lube. Unlike some i love the smell of Hoppes,
ranks just below B/P smoke and fresh baked bread as my
favorite things to smell. And way, way, way above the smell of my wet basset who just curled up under my feet after
being outside in the rain. Yep he is a weather dog, he's wet
must be raining outside. He's amazing

Try the Hoppes#9 plus and you will either throw away or
give away your Rusty Duck. :imo:

I don't have much Rusty Duck left so when it's gone I'll use the Hoppes.
I'm counting the days till I leave here.

The smell of regular Hoppes immediately takes me back to the Kitchen table where my dad and I would clean my .50 TC Hawken and his .54 TC Renegade, typically on a Sat. or Sun. night after an afternoon shooting or a weekend hunting. Aaaahhhhhhh, the smell of banana oil and memories of makin' smoke with my old man... :thanks:

I've used #9 Plus for years exclusively and have always had good luck with it. Not only is it a great patch lube but it is also good for swabbing between shots. When done shooting for the day, I clean the gun completely without using water - only #9 Plus and several patches. When I get back home I then clean my gun with hot soapy water to get te last bit of fouling out. Along with Stumpy's Moose Snot, it is one of the best kept secrets in muzzleloading! :imo:

Greeting Rounball and All,

Back in the early '80's, I let myself run out of Black-Solve, so bought a bottle of Hoppes No. 9 Plus.

It is a great all-a-round product. It does a great job of cleaning the bore, wiping the bore between shots, and lubing the patch for a round ball.

This is a product that I can recommend without any reservations.

Best regards,

John L. Hinnant
