should your powder horn move around alot?mine does no matter what i do.i have tried having it connected to my bag.it still moves around.i have had a wide strap about an inch and a half around with the rough side on me.it still moves.now im using a braided buckskin cord.its looks more native but it still moves when i move.is this common?my bag does it too.it just bugs me.does this happen to anyone else?also the horn is about 14 inches from the stopper to the end of the but plug.mabey its too big?it would seem that a native or anyone on the frontier would want a powder horn as big as they could get it?thanks bye :v

Most people make the strap too long. Also your horn may be too straight. You see that frequently too.

I'm betting the strap is too long also.

You want it to hang high on the rib cage, maybe a handlength below your armpit.

The horn should have a nice curve to it so that it follows the contour of your chest.

I'm guessing too long a strap, also. I carry mine up above my elbow bone. I can press the bag and seperate horn against my side with my right arm for crawling under low brush and branches.

I carry enough powder for 65 shots +/-.

I had the same problem with my bag and horn, both. They'd both end up in my lap while I was still walking, and the horn was constantly banging the butt of my rifle.

Cut the straps of your bag and horn, and start safety-pinning or tying them back together in shorter and shorter lengths until they're long enough that you can load comfortably, but no more. Either sew or tie them back together or make new straps of that length (easier to do with the horn than with the bag). Making sure they'll both go off and on over your head would be wise, too, but unless you're a mutant of some sort they'll be more than long enough if you're able to load without cramping up. They'll still tend to move, some, but due to the shorter straps it won't be near as much.

I remember watching Daniel Boone on Tv as a kid. He was always running off to do something urgent with Mingo. Everytime he took off, he reached down and moved his arm over his bag and horn and kind of held them in place as he ran.
I personally attach my horn with a leather strip to my bag strap. If my bag holds my horn in place and keeps it from moving around. It works really well. Just be sure to leave enough slack so you can load comforably. I've seen guys with a short strap on there horn and they had to contort their body just to fill a powder measure.

With a 59" long flint rifle, having a high horn does not require contortions. :rotf: I hang my measures from the horn strap so that the radius of the measure thong allows a fill and a pour without being overly long.

the strap isnt too long.its just above my elbow and just has a little more room to get it over my head.i dont know mabey i will just keep trying differant stuff. :youcrazy:

As a young’en I did a lot of muzzleloading shotgun hunting. To keep the hunting bag from floping around excesively we would tuck the front strap thru a belt we would wear on the outside of our coats. This would keep the pouch more in place at one’s side. The big pay off on wearing the hunting pouch this way - was when you bent over, to pick game up in front of you, the bag didn’t swing down and get in front of you, causing you to have to reshift everything when you stood up. The strap that ran down your back and to the rear of the bag would flex giving you needed ajustment for stuping over and as you
stood erect everything seemed to adjust right again.
Wearing the powder horn can be fun. Does one wear it on the same side as the pouch or does one want to wear it on the opposite side. I prefer to wear it on the same side as the pouch. But the straps are shorter. A flat horn really pays off if you want things to tuck next to you as you run thru the forest. Where possible affix the horn straps to the hunting pouch staps. If done correctly again the belt under the front hunting pouch strap helps aline the hunting horn to it’s position as you bend over and return to a standing position.
I have seen one fellow put slidding brass rings on each front and back strap (pouch), tuck a leather shoe Lace thru the rings and fasten each end to the powder horn. The rings would float up and down the straps returning the horn to the starting postion (center of pouch alinement) and next to the body. Again the Front strap of the pouch tucked under the belt helped the horn return to the same place.
Try the belt trick. Just lean over and grab something in front of you a couple of times with and with-out it. It just may work for you.

i wear my pouch and horn on the same side.also.i dont mind moving my pouch as much as the horn.cause the pouch doesnt make that much noise.the horn on the other hand does.and i love to be quiet in the woods :cursing: .im gonna try to bring it up a bit more.but im gonna keep working with it.i found that if you want to run and your just getting to one place to another.say back then.not hunting but not on a war party.just in the woods or moving to another villige or town.you can reposition your horn to the other side and place it to the back of you like you were near a fire.and it doesnt bang or bounce around at all.but as for hunting.it really gets in my way.i might try to place some leather ties on my strap of the pouch and horn so they are tied together.but loose enough to move up quickly when i need to relaod.who knows.i will think of something  :hmm:
