On top of roofs (older houses) they have this lead seals that go around the vent pipes. It is a lot of lead and most old houses had 2 or 3 of these seals. We have been working around old houses and repairing them. These old lead seals are just being thrown away. Are they a good source of good lead??

I think I'm safe in sayin "HECK YEA"!!!! All flashing I've ever come across is pure lead.. In my opinion ya don't need any expensive hardness testor. Get a car wheel weight and a piece of what you know is pure lead. Scratch them both with your thumb nail, you will easly see and feel the differance It ain't the most scientific and accurate way in the world but it works.

Old cast iron drain pipe are also sealed with pure lead.Plumbers and roofers are a good source of lead. Some of this lead will need to be cleaned up because it is coated in roofing tar when they begin to leak.If you have friends that are plumbers or roofers some will save out the lead if you ask them.

Hey thanks for reminding me guys I have a whole roll of the stuff I had forgot about. Yes, it is very pure lead the stuff I have no tin at all.

A couple of years ago my father-in-law brought me lead pipe from an old building in Denver that was torn down. I still haven't got it all melted down.

When I do melt it, I melt it outside, upwind and wear a mask. I'm a little concerned about that corrosion that has built up inside. It smells terrible.

On my drive to work this morning I came up behind a roofing company truck that had a big roll of sheet lead in the back.
All I could think was "how many roundballs could I get out of that".
