Took me until 11:30 but I managed to get my ten up along the Feather River north of Sacramento. My boy was moaning because he had to work, but he wasn't feeling too bad to help me eat them for dinner last night. They sure are tastey little critters.

I won't get out until Sunday afternoon. The waiting around time is killing me.

We fix our doves two different ways. We fry them and serve the breasts with biscuits and gravy. Hard to beat. :redthumb:

We also grill the little buggers. That's good too.

Breast 'em, stuff a jalapeno pepper in the cavity, then wrap in bacon and fasten with a toothpick. Grille over mesquite coals and wash down with Shiner Bock beer.

Dave- I fried up 5 strips of thick bacon and then browned the doves in to hot grease. As the browning is completed I put in a couple of cloves of crushed garlic and a usually some white zin, but for lack of wine, this year a bottle of beer. Hot simmer covered for 30 minutes and with five minutes to go I throw in some thick onion slices. I think it was better with the beer. I think I'm going to try the recipes posted above next time.

I only fired one shot yesterday morning with my new fowler and bagged a nice whitewing dove. Hunting is very spotty in the Austin area. The people getting their limits are hunting sunflower, corn or maize fields. I went to a stock tank this evening and only had one dove fly near me. I missed the shot.

Got to wait about 1 1/2 hours for the season to start. Noon today going to the river about 4PM that's when the birds start flying. (Whitewings). Now got to go get everything ready, caps, shot, powder, wads, etc. lots of water as temp is to be around 95 a lot cooler than last week.

Today was my first day out, dove huntong this year. It was great! I took my recently redone old 14ga. SxS out. I had shot clay targets, but not doves until today with this gun. She is like a wand. Point at them doves and they are cartwheeling to the ground. I was the only one shooting a BP gun let alone a SxS, the rest were all shooting semi-autos. I just hate it when I outscore them and also have the only double for the day.

Sad to say it but for the first time in 55 years the birds moved South sometime last week. Must of been the weather (rain)about 3"each day and the hurricanes this year. I was out 2 days and didn't fire a shot, first time in all these years I haven't gotten a limit. I'll wait until the first cold front brings those yankee birds south their fatter anyway. Did get to see a butterfly migration must of been millions between 4pm and dark. Had to keep you mouth shut or you would be eating bugs. Great day to be out in the outdoors though. Will now wait until 9/22

I'm waitin' for grouse season, I don't have an open place to shoot over, and in case I do hit a bird it has to be bigger'n a single mouth full.
